Former Kendrick Perkins found himself at the center of a tense moment during an AAU basketball game in Oklahoma over the weekend. Videos from the event showed the former NBA champion being held back near the court after emotions boiled over following a matchup between YPG Perkins and Swaveway Playaz 17U at the Trae Young Family Athletic Center in Norman on Sunday. The clips quickly spread across social media and sparked heavy debate among basketball fans online.But Perkins says there was more to the story than what people saw in the short videos. Speaking later on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Perkins explained that one of the players on his team was allegedly “body slammed” after the game by an opposing player. He said that moment pushed him to confront the other team’s coach. Perkins also made it clear that he takes protecting his players seriously, especially when parents are not around during tournaments and travel games.

According to TMZ Sports, witnesses at the game described the matchup as physical and emotional from both sides even before the confrontation happened. Video from the gym showed Perkins shouting toward members of the other team before several adults stepped in and pulled him back. Police officers from the Norman Police Department, who were working security at the event, helped calm the situation.The Norman Police Department later confirmed that no criminal charges were filed and no further police action was needed.
That update cooled down some of the early reactions online, where many people questioned how serious the incident really became inside the gym.Perkins did not back away from his actions afterward. In a social media post shared after the video went viral, he wrote, “Damn right and it probably won’t be the last time! I’m going to protect every single kid in my organization like they’re my own.”During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Perkins said both sides eventually apologized to each other and ended the situation peacefully. He added that cooler heads took over once everyone had time to settle down.Perkins has always been known for bringing emotion and intensity to basketball. During his NBA career, he played for teams including the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, Cavaliers, and Pelicans. He later moved into television with ESPN while also coaching youth basketball, including coaching his son Kenxton Perkins, who is considered one of the top young prospects in the Class of 2030.
