TMC MLAs Stage Sit-In Over Delay In LoP Status, Office Space Allocation

A political face-off unfolded inside the West Bengal Assembly as TMC MLAs staged a sit-in outside Speaker Rathindranath Bose’s chamber, alleging delays in granting the opposition its due recognition and facilities. The protest was led by TMC legislative party leader Shovondeb Chattopadhyay and MLA Kunal Ghosh, who claimed they were denied a meeting with the Speaker over issues related to Leader of Opposition recognition and office allocation. TMC said it had already informed the Assembly that Chattopadhyay was elected leader of the legislative party with support from 80 MLAs, above the required threshold for official opposition status. Speaker Bose maintained that procedural clarifications were needed in the party’s communication and assured that office space and facilities would be provided after proper arrangements. BJP dismissed the protest as political theatre.

The 70-foot statue of football legend Lionel Messi installed on Kolkata’s VIP Road in Lake Town is set to be relocated after authorities declared it a public safety risk. The structure, depicting Messi lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy, was found visibly swaying during recent winds, prompting complaints from residents and an urgent inspection by PWD engineers. Officials said the statue will first be secured with heavy-duty cables before a 40-tonne crane lifts it away in one piece. Temporary nylon rope supports and barricades have already been put in place around the site. Authorities are considering relocating the installation to places like Eco Park or Rabindra Sarobar, with the base height likely to be reduced.
