Set a victory target of just 139 in 53 overs, New Zealand finished on 140-2 with more than seven overs left after the match was extended into the reserve sixth day after two days' play were completely washed out. Day 6 Session 2 in a nutshell
A superb combined bowling performance was led by Tim Southee (4/48) as New Zealand bundled out India for 170 in the second innings to put one hand on the WTC trophy in Southampton on the 'sixth' day of the marquee Test. A poor batting performance, that never got going right from the start of the day, allowed the Kiwi pacers to take total control. India eventually managed to set a mediocre 139-run target for New Zealand with 53 overs remaining in the day. At the Tea break, New Zealand were 19 for no loss, needing another 120 runs for victory in 45 overs with both their openers Tom Latham (5) and Devon Conway (9) unbeaten at the crease. Resuming on 130 for 5, India could only add 40 runs for the last five wickets as Kiwi pacers choked the batsmen for runs. From a barrage of bouncers to some exceptional length bowling, Kiwi pacers kept the star studded India batting line-up under the lid throughout their second innings. Along with Southee, Trent Boult also managed three wickets while Kyle Jamieson and Neil Wagner share three wickets between them.
