IND vs ENG highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: England 339/6 at stumps on Day 4, need 35 runs to win at The Oval

India vs England highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: Harry Brook and Joe Root delivered commanding centuries before rain and fading light brought a premature end to Day 4 of the fifth Test, setting up a thrilling conclusion to the England-India series at The Oval.

England reached 339/6 when play was halted at 1703 GMT, still needing 35 runs to complete a record fourth-innings chase of 374. India, on the other hand, require four more wickets to level the series 2-2.

The day had begun with England struggling at 106/3 following the dismissal of stand-in captain Ollie Pope. But Yorkshire teammates Brook (111) and Root (105) swung momentum firmly back in England's favour, building a remarkable 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Brook’s departure triggered a slump that saw England lose three wickets for just 36 runs, including Root, who edged behind off Prasidh Krishna soon after reaching his 39th Test ton.

By the time bad light stopped play at 1630 GMT, Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) were at the crease. A heavy downpour soon followed, ruling out any chance of resumption.

The Oval’s record for the highest successful fourth-innings chase stands at 263 — set by England back in 1902. But under the fearless leadership of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England have made a habit of rewriting Test cricket conventions. They opened this series by gunning down 371 in a dramatic win at Headingley.

Brook’s innings was packed with intent. He hammered 27 runs in the space of eight balls at one stage and even lofted Akash Deep for a six despite overcast conditions aiding the pacers. He survived a major scare when a mistimed hook off Prasidh Krishna was caught by Siraj, only for the fielder to step on the boundary rope, turning it into a six.

India captain Shubman Gill introduced spin late — not until the 43rd over — but neither Washington Sundar nor Ravindra Jadeja could dislodge the set batters. Brook brought up his century in just 91 balls with 12 fours and two sixes. His dismissal was dramatic — the bat flew out of his hands while attempting a big shot and the ball was safely caught by Siraj at mid-off.

Root, batting with signature elegance, reached his hundred with a pair of boundaries off Siraj and looked composed throughout his innings. However, he too fell shortly after, edging a flick to the keeper off Krishna.

Earlier in the day, India had made early inroads. Mohammed Siraj bowled Zak Crawley with the final ball of Day 3, and on Sunday, Prasidh Krishna got Duckett (54) to nick one to KL Rahul at second slip. Siraj then struck again to remove Pope for 27 with an in-seaming delivery.

With just 35 more runs needed by England and four wickets standing between India and a series draw, the stage is perfectly set for a dramatic finish on the final day — if the weather allows.

IND vs ENG Live Score: DRINKS BREAK!
England have dominated the afternoon session, steadily building their advantage. Harry Brook and Joe Root appear comfortable at the crease, with Brook's aggressive batting before lunch forcing India to adopt defensive tactics. India's field placements since the session began have been conservative, enabling England's batsmen to easily rotate the strike. The pitch has shown minimal assistance, barring a few deliveries that moved back considerably. The Indian team's energy in the field seems low, and they desperately need a wicket to shift momentum. Shubman Gill calls upon Ravindra Jadeja, hoping for a breakthrough.

Harry Brook's fearless approach on Day 4 of the fifth Test at The Oval had shades of Rishabh Pant, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Former India head coach and commentator Ravi Shastri drew a direct comparison between the two, highlighting how the England batter shifted the momentum of the game with his aggressive batting.

Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket during the lunch break, Shastri said, “The first hour was watchful — really good bowling, plenty of chat out there in the face of the batsmen, the fielders as well as the bowlers — and India picked up a couple of wickets. Then came the counter-attack in the next one hour. So a seesaw battle — suddenly there was a shift in the balance."

"England started putting pressure on India, the fielders started disappearing into the outfield, catches were taken, going over the boundary line — everything started happening, which often happens when someone comes out there and bats like a Rishabh Pant. Harry Brook was doing a Rishabh Pant for England today, and you could see the momentum shift almost immediately,” exclaimed Shastri, who gave praise where it was due.

Brook came in after the dismissal of England captain Ollie Pope and wasted no time. His aggressive strokeplay, especially his handling of pace, unsettled India’s bowling plans and brought England back into the contest.

His attacking approach also earned him a slice of luck. Mohammed Siraj took a catch near the boundary to seemingly dismiss Brook, but stepped on the rope before regaining balance — handing the batter six runs and another chance.

IND vs ENG Live Score: LUNCH REPORT, Day 4
IND vs ENG Live Score: LUNCH REPORT, Day 4

India made an early breakthrough on Day 4, but Harry Brook’s aggressive approach kept the momentum swinging back and forth as the thrilling final Test at The Oval remained delicately poised at the lunch break on Sunday.

England went in for the interval at 164 for 3, still needing 210 more runs to reach the daunting 374-run target set by India—an effort that would secure a 3-1 series victory for the hosts.

Joe Root, currently ranked the world’s best Test batter, held firm on 23*, while Harry Brook injected urgency into the innings with a counter-attacking 38* that included four boundaries and two sixes. His arrival at the crease helped England regain some footing during a tense morning session.

Brook entered the fray with England in a spot of bother at 106 for 3, shortly after Mohammed Siraj had dismissed acting captain Ollie Pope for 27. Siraj struck with a delivery that stayed low and jagged in, trapping Pope lbw. Brook wasted no time settling in—he blasted 27 runs in a rapid eight-ball burst, highlighted by a stunning lofted six over cover off Akash Deep, despite the overcast conditions aiding India’s seamers.

He had a major slice of luck soon after, when an attempted hook off Prasidh Krishna was misjudged. Siraj took the catch near the fine leg rope but stepped on the boundary in the process, turning a potential wicket into six runs.

England began the day at 50 for 1, having lost Zak Crawley to the final ball of Day 3. Siraj had delivered a pinpoint yorker to clean up the opener, ending the previous day on a high for India.

Ben Duckett, unbeaten overnight on 34, resumed alongside Pope and initially looked composed. However, consistent probing by Siraj and Krishna eventually led to his downfall. Attempting a drive away from his body, Duckett nicked one off Krishna to second slip, where KL Rahul held onto a sharp chance. He departed for 54, leaving England at 82 for 2.

Pope looked to counter, taking Krishna apart with three boundaries in a single over—a flowing drive down the ground, a flick through midwicket, and a crisp pull shot. But Siraj returned to cut that resurgence short, pinning Pope in front with a delivery that nipped back off the seam. It was Siraj’s 20th scalp of the series, putting him at the top of the wicket-takers list.

India’s commanding second-innings total of 396 had been anchored by a sparkling 118 from Yashasvi Jaiswal, supported by a quickfire 53 from Washington Sundar in the later stages of the innings.

The task ahead remains monumental for England. No team has successfully chased more than 263 in the fourth innings at The Oval—a record that has stood since 1902. Still, having chased down 371 in the series opener at Headingley, England will believe they can defy history once again.

IND vs ENG Live Score: DRINKS BREAK!
The opening hour at The Oval delivered compelling cricket with an engaging contest between batting and bowling. Initially, Duckett and Pope displayed caution whilst dealing with the moving ball. Despite several near misses against Siraj, Duckett settled in and reached his half-century.

However, India's tactical switch proved effective when Prasidh Krishna induced an imprecise shot from Duckett to secure a dismissal. Krishna has demonstrated impressive control, and the overcast weather has provided just enough assistance to challenge the batsmen consistently.
16:32 (IST) Aug 03
Tensions are running high at The Oval as India push for a series-levelling win, and the intensity of the battle is now showing on the field. On the morning of Day 4, Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen engaging in some verbal sparring with Ben Duckett, questioning his change in approach. “Come on, I want to see your shots. Play the sweep, reverse sweep. This is not your game,” Jaiswal reportedly said while fielding close by.

Duckett didn’t shy away and hit back with, “Why should I listen to you?” Shubman Gill also stepped in, reinforcing India’s intent to apply pressure both with the ball and with their words.

In the first innings, Duckett had repeatedly played the reverse sweep, scoring runs before eventually falling to Akash Deep while attempting the same shot.

With England chasing 374 for victory, these mind games have added extra edge to the contest. They ended Day 3 on 50 for 1, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a superb yorker to dismiss Zak Crawley on the final ball of the day. Crawley, who resumed on 34* on Day 4, added 21 more before being dismissed for 55 by Prasidh Krishna.

India’s commanding position was powered by another superb century from Jaiswal, who made 118, along with half-centuries from Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Their second-innings total of 396 set England a stiff target, with two full days left in the match.

India vs England highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: Harry Brook and Joe Root smashed brilliant centuries before rain and bad light brought an early end to Day 4 of the fifth Test, leaving the England vs India series finale on a knife edge at The Oval.

England were 339/6 when play was called off at 1703 GMT, still needing 35 runs to complete a record chase of 374. India, meanwhile, need four wickets to square the five-Test series 2-2.

Earlier in the day, England were in trouble at 106/3 after the loss of stand-in captain Ollie Pope. But Yorkshiremen Brook (111) and Root (105) turned the tide with a stunning 195-run stand for the fourth wicket, taking the game away from India before Brook’s dismissal sparked a mini-collapse — England lost three wickets for just 36 runs.

Root also fell shortly after reaching his 39th Test century, edging behind off Prasidh Krishna for 105.

When bad light stopped play at 1630 GMT, England had Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) at the crease, with a downpour soon after making any resumption impossible.

No team has chased more than 263 to win in the fourth innings at The Oval — a record set by England in 1902. However, under Stokes and McCullum’s leadership since 2022, England’s ultra-aggressive Test approach has already rewritten norms. They began this series by chasing down 371 against India at Headingley in June.

Brook's knock was full of flair — he smashed 27 runs in just 8 balls at one point, including a lofted six off Akash Deep even under heavy overcast skies. He had a stroke of luck too when Siraj caught him at fine leg off Prasidh Krishna but stepped on the boundary rope, turning a dismissal into six runs.

Shubman Gill waited until the 43rd over to introduce spin, but neither Washington Sundar nor Ravindra Jadeja could trouble the well-set Brook and Root. Brook reached his second hundred of the series in 91 balls with 12 fours and two sixes, and was finally dismissed in spectacular fashion — losing his bat while trying to clear the boundary, caught by Siraj at mid-off.

Root, as calm and classy as ever, brought up his hundred with a straight drive off Siraj, reaching the milestone in 137 balls. But his innings ended soon after when he flicked at Krishna and edged behind.

Earlier, India resumed well — Siraj bowled Zak Crawley with the final ball of Day 3. Prasidh Krishna then dismissed Ben Duckett (54), who edged to KL Rahul, before Siraj trapped Pope lbw for 27.

Now, with 35 runs needed and 4 wickets to take, all eyes are on Monday’s final day at The Oval — rain permitting — for what promises to be a thrilling finish.
