IND vs ENG highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: England 339/6 at stumps on Day 4, need 35 runs to win at The Oval

India vs England highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: Harry Brook and Joe Root delivered commanding centuries before rain and fading light brought a premature end to Day 4 of the fifth Test, setting up a thrilling conclusion to the England-India series at The Oval.

England reached 339/6 when play was halted at 1703 GMT, still needing 35 runs to complete a record fourth-innings chase of 374. India, on the other hand, require four more wickets to level the series 2-2.

The day had begun with England struggling at 106/3 following the dismissal of stand-in captain Ollie Pope. But Yorkshire teammates Brook (111) and Root (105) swung momentum firmly back in England's favour, building a remarkable 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Brook’s departure triggered a slump that saw England lose three wickets for just 36 runs, including Root, who edged behind off Prasidh Krishna soon after reaching his 39th Test ton.

By the time bad light stopped play at 1630 GMT, Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) were at the crease. A heavy downpour soon followed, ruling out any chance of resumption.

The Oval’s record for the highest successful fourth-innings chase stands at 263 — set by England back in 1902. But under the fearless leadership of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England have made a habit of rewriting Test cricket conventions. They opened this series by gunning down 371 in a dramatic win at Headingley.

Brook’s innings was packed with intent. He hammered 27 runs in the space of eight balls at one stage and even lofted Akash Deep for a six despite overcast conditions aiding the pacers. He survived a major scare when a mistimed hook off Prasidh Krishna was caught by Siraj, only for the fielder to step on the boundary rope, turning it into a six.

India captain Shubman Gill introduced spin late — not until the 43rd over — but neither Washington Sundar nor Ravindra Jadeja could dislodge the set batters. Brook brought up his century in just 91 balls with 12 fours and two sixes. His dismissal was dramatic — the bat flew out of his hands while attempting a big shot and the ball was safely caught by Siraj at mid-off.

Root, batting with signature elegance, reached his hundred with a pair of boundaries off Siraj and looked composed throughout his innings. However, he too fell shortly after, edging a flick to the keeper off Krishna.

Earlier in the day, India had made early inroads. Mohammed Siraj bowled Zak Crawley with the final ball of Day 3, and on Sunday, Prasidh Krishna got Duckett (54) to nick one to KL Rahul at second slip. Siraj then struck again to remove Pope for 27 with an in-seaming delivery.

With just 35 more runs needed by England and four wickets standing between India and a series draw, the stage is perfectly set for a dramatic finish on the final day — if the weather allows.

IND vs ENG Live Score: PITCH REPORT
Surrey have won by playing on pitches like this, it's got the same amount of grass as the County games. If it goes late into Day 4, it might spin as it's a bit dry at the ends. Main threat is going to be seam.

I'd say 324 more required is a lot of runs.

Because you have grass, the hard Duke's ball will go into it and create indentations, that'll cause slight uneven bounce. That wicket will lift the Indian dressing room, they had great plans to both openers. It's still a pretty good pitch to bowl seam on, England are going to have to play seriously well

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 4: 'Akash Deep played like a proper batsman'
Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar heaped praise on fast bowler Akash Deep for his composed and impactful batting performance in the second innings, which gave India a significant lift in the ongoing fifth Test against England at The Oval.

Akash, who scored a fluent 66 studded with 12 boundaries, stitched a crucial 107-run stand for the third wicket alongside opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Their partnership not only stabilized India's innings but also laid the groundwork for the middle order.

“Akash Deep took his chances early on against Bethell in the very first over, but after that, he was very, very thoughtful. He played like a proper batsman; he is capable of batting, and he was the one who saved India from a follow-on in the Brisbane Test match. He showed a lot of heart and wasn't afraid of the short ball.

"He took his chances when the field was up, defended when the field was back, and ran really well between the wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal's contribution was also immense in that partnership, as he made sure Akash Deep stayed in the zone and helped him stitch that partnership together," Bangar said on JioHotstar.

Jaiswal’s fine century (118), complemented by half-centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, propelled India to a total of 396, setting a stiff target of 374 for the hosts.

England, in reply, ended Day 3 at 50 for 1, with Mohammed Siraj striking late to remove Zak Crawley. The tall opener was undone by a sharp off-stump yorker from Siraj just before stumps, tilting the momentum slightly in India's favour heading into Day 4.

Bangar lauded India's bowling effort in the final session.

“Credit to India that they didn't allow the English batters to run away with the game. Both these teams were playing the waiting game; even somebody like Duckett wasn’t really charging down the wicket or playing those reverse scoops. They knew they had to hang on, and they took a few blows on their fingers as well. But all in all, to end a Day like that would certainly mean that India would go to bed the happier team. Because had they not got this particular wicket, you know what damage the England openers can do, and so far they have been very, very effective in the series.”

“A wicket makes a massive difference. Both openers were very, very confident. Crawley even took one ball on the bicep, and Duckett was hit on the fingers. Prasidh and Akash Deep, to me, were the pick of the bowlers in that small spell.

"All three bowlers made life difficult for the English batters. The fact that they were imaginative, like having a sweeper cover for Zak Crawley, or even the smart placement of a slightly deeper square leg for Duckett, made the batters think about where their scoring opportunities were. So, credit to India for coming out with different plans and forcing the English batters to adjust. It was good cricket all around," Bangar added.

India vs England Live Score: Gavaskar on Gill
Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said Shubman Gill's 754 runs are far better than what he achieved way back in 1971.

Gill finished with 754 runs, just 20 short of Gavaskar's record of 774, during the fifth Test against England in London on August 3.

"I think in anticipation of him going past my record, I got something for him. But well, I mean, this is all in God's hands. But 754 runs, it's fantastic," he said on Sony Sports.

"The difference is that 754 came with the additional responsibility of being captain. I was the baby of the team. You know, it wouldn't have mattered if I had failed.

"Nobody would have given a hoot if I had failed. But to be the captain and score 750-plus runs—750-plus runs where he's making a difference to his side's fortunes. Don’t go by those 20 runs, but just see what that 754 has done for Indian cricket."

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 4: Akash Deep joins elite list
Night watchman Akash Deep scored a gritty maiden Test fifty at the Oval during the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England on Friday. His performance, coupled with a 100-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, helped India reach 189-3 at lunch on Day 4, leading England by 166 runs.

Deep's innings of 66 runs off 94 balls, including 12 fours, came to an end when Atkinson dismissed him just before lunch. The partnership with Jaiswal added 107 runs for the third wicket.

India began Day 3 at 75/2, with Jaiswal on 51 and Deep on 4, holding a lead of 52 runs over England's first innings total of 247.

Deep's achievement places him in an exclusive group of cricketers who have claimed ten wickets in a match and scored a fifty on an England tour, joining legends like Hugh Trumble, Shane Warne, Imran Khan, Keith Miller, and Richard Hadlee.

The fast bowler became just the fourth Indian to score a Test fifty at No.4 in England this century, alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill. This was particularly notable given his modest first-class batting average of 11.48 before the Oval Test.

Deep's performance follows his remarkable ten-wicket haul in India's historic 336-run victory at Edgbaston last month, their first Test win at the venue. His match figures of 10/187 set a new record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in England, surpassing Chetan Sharma's previous mark of 10/188.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 4: Rohit Sharma was at the Oval on Day 3
India's former Test captain Rohit Sharma made an unexpected visit to The Oval during the third day of the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test match between India and England. Television cameras captured him watching the Indian team bat during the morning session, dressed casually in black denim attire.

The broadcast cameras spotted Rohit alongside Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani in the stands, marking his first appearance at a Test match since announcing his retirement from the format in May.

"He would be pretty happy with what he has been seeing this morning," remarked former Australia women's cricketer Mel Jones during the broadcast as cameras focused on Rohit towards the end of the first session.

Rohit's Test career, which concluded in May, saw him accumulate 4,301 runs from 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. As captain, he led India in 24 Tests, securing 12 victories and experiencing nine defeats.

India vs England Live Score: Tongue confidents of chasing it
England faces a challenging target of 374 runs against India in the final Test at The Oval, with Josh Tongue expressing confidence in the team's ability to achieve another remarkable run chase. At stumps, England reached 50/1, requiring 324 more runs with two full days remaining, after India was bowled out for 396 in their second innings.

"Pretty chilled, not much overthinking about it. I got asked the same question at Headingley, so I don't see why not, we can't chase down these runs," Tongue said at the post-day press conference.

"Yeah, I think how we play as a batting unit is obviously very positive and very exciting and yeah, the batting line up that we've got, I can't see why we can't give it a good go," the 27-year-old seamer added.

England's opening pair of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley started their chase with intent, forming a 50-run partnership. However, Mohammed Siraj dismissed Crawley for 14 runs with a yorker that struck the stumps.

Duckett remained unbeaten on 34 from 48 balls at the close of play.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Siraj strikes late as India close in on series-levelling win
Just when England’s openers seemed to be settling in for the night, Mohammed Siraj landed a telling blow. With the field set for the bouncer, he slipped in a fast, full yorker that crashed into Zak Crawley’s stumps. It was a smart change-up and a momentum-seizing strike, reducing England to 50/1 at Stumps. With 332 more to chase and scoreboard pressure building, India need just 8 wickets on Day 4 to square the series. The Oval pitch is still lively — and the hosts now have it all to do.

IND vs ENG Live Score: England's fielding woes continue – six drops prove costly
Another frustrating day for England in the field saw them drop six catches in the innings. Crawley put down Akash Deep early and shelled another at slip later in the day. Karun Nair, Jaiswal, and Jadeja all enjoyed moments of fortune as edges went down, with England unable to convert the pressure created by their bowlers into breakthroughs. The misfields and missed chances ultimately allowed India to stretch their lead past 370, a figure that could haunt the hosts if the pitch deteriorates further.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 4: Washington Sundar’s power-punch extends India's lead beyond 370
Coming in at No. 9, Washington Sundar launched a brutal counterattack against England's tiring pace attack, smashing a 39-ball half-century laced with hooks and pulls. His unbeaten 39-run partnership with Prasidh Krishna — all runs scored by him — was the highest 10th-wicket stand in Indian Test history where one batter scored all the runs. Washington’s cameo took India’s total to 396 and set England a daunting 374 to chase on a pitch that’s still offering plenty for bowlers.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Nightwatchman Akash Deep turns aggressor with historic fifty
Akash Deep’s role was supposed to be limited to surviving the evening. Instead, he walked out and smashed 66 off 94 — his highest Test, international, and first-class score. He became the first Indian nightwatchman since Amit Mishra (2011) to score a Test fifty. His aggressive intent rattled England’s pacers as he flayed anything loose and added 107 runs with Jaiswal for the third wicket. A dropped catch by Crawley earlier in the day proved costly, as Akash ensured India made full use of the platform laid on Day 2.

The young opener showed immense discipline on a spicy pitch and anchored India’s innings with his 118, taking India closer to a 300-plus lead before falling while attempting one upper cut too many. It capped off a superb campaign in which he’s firmly announced himself as India's next big red-ball batting hope.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Welcome
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy!

We could be heading into the final day of what has been a thrilling five-match Test series. India need 8 wickets to level the series 2-2, while England require 332 runs to seal it 3-1.

Stay tuned as we bring you all the live action from The Oval!
India vs England highlights, 5th Test Match Day 4: Harry Brook and Joe Root smashed brilliant centuries before rain and bad light brought an early end to Day 4 of the fifth Test, leaving the England vs India series finale on a knife edge at The Oval.

England were 339/6 when play was called off at 1703 GMT, still needing 35 runs to complete a record chase of 374. India, meanwhile, need four wickets to square the five-Test series 2-2.

Earlier in the day, England were in trouble at 106/3 after the loss of stand-in captain Ollie Pope. But Yorkshiremen Brook (111) and Root (105) turned the tide with a stunning 195-run stand for the fourth wicket, taking the game away from India before Brook’s dismissal sparked a mini-collapse — England lost three wickets for just 36 runs.

Root also fell shortly after reaching his 39th Test century, edging behind off Prasidh Krishna for 105.

When bad light stopped play at 1630 GMT, England had Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) at the crease, with a downpour soon after making any resumption impossible.

No team has chased more than 263 to win in the fourth innings at The Oval — a record set by England in 1902. However, under Stokes and McCullum’s leadership since 2022, England’s ultra-aggressive Test approach has already rewritten norms. They began this series by chasing down 371 against India at Headingley in June.

Brook's knock was full of flair — he smashed 27 runs in just 8 balls at one point, including a lofted six off Akash Deep even under heavy overcast skies. He had a stroke of luck too when Siraj caught him at fine leg off Prasidh Krishna but stepped on the boundary rope, turning a dismissal into six runs.

Shubman Gill waited until the 43rd over to introduce spin, but neither Washington Sundar nor Ravindra Jadeja could trouble the well-set Brook and Root. Brook reached his second hundred of the series in 91 balls with 12 fours and two sixes, and was finally dismissed in spectacular fashion — losing his bat while trying to clear the boundary, caught by Siraj at mid-off.

Root, as calm and classy as ever, brought up his hundred with a straight drive off Siraj, reaching the milestone in 137 balls. But his innings ended soon after when he flicked at Krishna and edged behind.

Earlier, India resumed well — Siraj bowled Zak Crawley with the final ball of Day 3. Prasidh Krishna then dismissed Ben Duckett (54), who edged to KL Rahul, before Siraj trapped Pope lbw for 27.

Now, with 35 runs needed and 4 wickets to take, all eyes are on Monday’s final day at The Oval — rain permitting — for what promises to be a thrilling finish.
