Maharashtra Cricket Association secretary Riyaz Bagwan informed TOI about two new selection committees: one for the Ranji Trophy and U-23 teams (senior) and the other for U-19s (junior). The senior selection committee will be chaired by Abhijeet Kale, a resident of Pune. Other members are Kaiser Fakih, Ketan Doshi, Abhijeet Deshpande and Ravi Yerawadekar.

This will be Kale’s first-ever foray into the selection committee of any state team. “I was offered this opportunity by

MCA

and I decided to take up this responsibility,” Kale, 46, told TOI but declined to go into the details about his selection. He added that his experience of playing for Maharashtra for many years must have come handy in him getting the role.

Kale was in the news recently when he contested against Yajurvindra Singh for a spot in the MCA apex council. That election process was deemed invalid. National selectors Kiran More and Pranab Roy had accused Kale of offering them a bribe in exchange of a spot in the Indian team in 2003. He was subsequently banned by the BCCI for a year. He had apologised for ‘influencing’ the selectors but didn’t accept the charge of a bribe.
