Pakistan's narrow three-wicket victory in the first ODI against South Africa in Paarl on Tuesday followed a moment of bonhomie as the visitors left the disappointment of the T20I series loss behind them to start the 50-overs leg of their tour on a winning note. In a heartwarming gesture, all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who was named the 'Player of the Match' for his 4/32 and 82 not out, chose to share his award with the young talent Saim Ayub who starred with his second ODI century (109) to lead the visitors' successful run-chase. The 22-year-old Ayub set the stage for victory as Pakistan reached 242 for 7 with three deliveries remaining, surpassing South Africa's total of 239-9 at the Boland Park.A crucial partnership of 141 runs from 133 balls between Ayub and Agha for the fifth wicket shifted the momentum towards Pakistan, following their initial struggles with scoring and falling behind the required rate against South Africa's effective early bowling.Saim launched an assault on South African fast bowler Ottniel Baartman, scoring 17 runs in four deliveries during the 35th over, accelerating the chase.Ayub, who struck 10 boundaries and three sixes, was eventually caught at deep fine leg off Kagiso Rabada's bowling, with 39 runs required and eight overs remaining.Pakistan's momentum was briefly halted by the loss of two quick wickets, raising local supporters' hopes of an improbable turnaround.
