What to expect in the chase? We have seen some crazy things happen in cricket, but if New Zealand do manage to defend this total, it would be something quite extraordinary. Early wickets are their only way in, and if they can do that, you never know. Pakistan will have an eye on chasing this down quickly if the opportunity presents itself. Boosting the net run rate could prove crucial later in the Super Six stage, where qualification may well come down to fine margins. Stay tuned for the second essay.
A quick word from Abdul Subhan - He feels that it is a good batting wicket. Shares that his plan was to bowl as many dot balls as possible and make the batters play. Subhan adds that after the first Powerplay, his focus is on keeping the run rate in check by continuing to build pressure through dot balls. Mentions that getting the opportunity to play on different surfaces has been a great learning experience for him.
Collapse in a flash - That promise was short-lived. Mohammad Shayan struck to give Pakistan the opening they needed, and from there, Ali Raza and Abdul Subhan took complete control. Even as wickets fell, New Zealand's batters continued to attack, refusing to dial it down. From a relatively steady 59/1, the Kiwis suffered a dramatic collapse, slipping to 67/7 in the space of a few overs. The tail dug in and showed some stubborn resistance, but they were eventually bundled out for 110, with Subhan finishing with a four-wicket haul.
An early setback, followed by promise - After being asked to bat first, New Zealand went in with a new opening combination, but it did not bring much success as Marco Alpe fell early. Hugo Bogue and skipper Tom Jones then came together and managed to find a few boundaries. The way they were going, it looked like the Kiwis were beginning to build towards a steady platform.
A fundamental error to finish off a forgettable effort! Hunter Shore will want to forget that quickly. He assumed the ball was dead and, while he tapped his bat before leaving the crease, the ball was very much still in play. The keeper was sharp to whip the bails off. That caps off a dominant bowling effort from Pakistan.
