During the Minecraft Live broadcast, Jack Black and Jason Momoa appeared directly from the set in New Zealand. The production of the sequel was driven by the overwhelming box office success of the original, which earned $163 million in its opening weekend in North America alone, setting a record for the highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation. It went on to gross approximately $960 million worldwide.
The film is directed by Jared Hess, and he co-wrote the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. Hess previously was behind works like Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, and the first Minecraft film, ensuring creative continuity across both entries.
