Messi became the youngest player to represent Argentina at a World Cup. Messi was introduced in the 74th minute against Serbia and Montenegro where he scored the final goal in 6-0 drubbing of the Serbia and Montenegro.

Messi, 20, was elected young player of the Copa America in 2007. In their quarter-final match against Peru, Messi scored the second goal in the 4-0 win.

After scoring his first hat-trick against Switzerland in a friendly match in February 2012, he scored another hat-trick, this time against a much stronger side Brazil in June the same year in a friendly played in United States. Argentina won 4-3.
