Andy Murray is no longer playing tennis on tour, but he is still winning at the top level of sport. On Sunday in Madrid, a padel team co-owned by Andy Murray and Anthony Joshua lifted the Hexagon Cup title after beating a team linked to Sergio Aguero in the final. Murray and Joshua own Advantage Padel Team, and their players finished the job with a clear 2–0 win in the best-of-three final.
The final was played at the Caja Magica in Madrid and brought together big names from different sports. Murray, now 38, could not attend the match in person but shared a good luck message for his team before the final. Joshua was also not present, as he has stayed away from public events after the tragic death of close friends in a car crash in Nigeria late last year. Even without their owners courtside, Advantage Padel Team stayed calm, played smart, and won the trophy at one of Padel's most talked-about events.
Andy Murray, Anthony Joshua, and Sergio Aguero headline star-filled Hexagon Cup final
Former Manchester City and Argentina striker Sergio Aguero was in Madrid throughout the week and walked onto the court with the trophy before the final. He then watched his side lose 2–0 to Advantage Padel Team. After the match, Aguero thanked the organisers and fans, saying, “I would like to thank the Hexagon Cup team, it has been a fantastic event.
Last year we won, this year we didn’t, but I would also like to thank the whole team, our family and all the fans for cheering us on all week.”
The Hexagon Cup follows a team format with eight teams. Top men’s, women’s, and Next Gen players compete together, which has helped the event stand out. Interest from famous athletes keeps growing. Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski backs RL9 Padel Team, who finished third. Team manager Tomasz Smokowski shared how involved Lewandowski is, saying he asks for scores daily, even sending messages late at night.
Other owners include Formula 1 driver Pierre Gasly and Alpine president Loic Fery, while actor Eva Longoria is also part of another team. This mix of sport and entertainment shows how fast padel is rising worldwide.
Away from the Hexagon Cup, Premier Padel, owned by Qatar Sports Investments, revealed a special art-style padel court at Art Basel Qatar. QSI chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said the idea was about bringing people and cultures together through sport and creativity. London will also host a Premier Padel P1 event later this year, showing the sport’s growing reach.
