Why did Brazil FIFA World Cup squad journey begin with a mysterious water related ritual?

Brazil’s national football team received a unique and emotional send-off before departing for the FIFA World Cup. On Monday, the team left Rio de Janeiro for the United States, where they will begin preparations for the tournament. A special ceremony involving the team aircraft created excitement. The unusual tradition sparked curiosity and became a talking point as Brazil started its journey toward another World Cup campaign.

As the squad prepared to leave Galeao Airport, two fire engines sprayed large streams of water over the aircraft, creating a symbolic arch on the runway. The ritual, often referred to as a "baptism", is commonly used in aviation to celebrate important flights. Airport officials reportedly sought approval from the Brazilian Football Confederation before carrying out the ceremony. The tradition is believed to bring good fortune and blessings for a safe journey. For Brazil, many supporters hope it could also mark the beginning of a successful World Cup challenge.

A special blessing before Brazil’s FIFA World Cup mission

The ceremonial water salute took place as Brazil’s squad boarded a specially branded aircraft bound for Newark, New Jersey. The plane, a Boeing 767-300ER operated by Aeronexus, featured the Brazilian Football Confederation logo and has previously been used for major international events, including the Rolling Stones’ 60th anniversary tour in 2022.


The water arch was created by airport fire crews as the aircraft moved along the runway. The tradition is often reserved for milestone occasions, including inaugural flights, retirements, and important departures. In Brazil’s case, it served as a symbolic blessing for the team before the World Cup.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti and his players were on board as they travelled to begin their final preparations. The ceremony also carried additional meaning because several members of the squad have personal connections to religious baptisms. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has previously taken part in such ceremonies, while young star Endrick underwent a baptism alongside his wife last year.

Meanwhile, attention remains focused on Neymar. The forward travelled with the squad despite recovering from a calf injury suffered shortly after his selection for the World Cup roster. Initial reports suggested the problem was minor, but later assessments indicated the injury was more significant than first believed.

Neymar was unable to participate fully when he joined the national team camp. Reports have suggested that some members of the squad privately questioned whether the seriousness of the injury had been fully understood from the beginning. The Brazilian star is expected to miss Brazil’s opening Group C match against Morocco next weekend.
