The New England Patriots have had a rough few months. A Super Bowl 60 loss to Seattle, a head coach caught in personal controversy, and a franchise navigating the fallout in real time. But on Sunday in Worcester, quarterback Drake Maye stepped away from all of it for a day and made something good happen. His inaugural "Mayeday" Celebrity Softball Classic at Polar Park raised significant funds for families in need and gave New England something to actually feel good about.
Anne Michael Maye breaks silence on life in New England, reveals gratitude during chaotic Patriots transition
Maye's charity event doubled as the official launch of the MayeDay Family Foundation, a nonprofit he and his wife Ann Michael established to support children and families facing hardship.
The day featured a home run derby that alone generated $54,000 after participants combined for 54 home runs. Two teams squared off: Team Patriots against Team Sox, and the game had no shortage of action.
Team Sox won convincingly, 16-10, powered by multi-home run performances from Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins and Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane. Team Patriots did mount a rally, with consecutive home runs from Romeo Doubs, Luke Maye, and Drake Maye himself.
Ann Michael Maye also reached base late on a throwing error, adding a family moment to the competitive evening.
Still, it was the moments off the field that stuck. When Ann Michael began speaking to the crowd about her high school athletic career, Maye loudly interrupted from the background with "Great athlete. Still is." The room heard it clearly.
Ann Michael also addressed the New England media about what has been a hectic stretch for the family. "I feel like everything happened so, so fast here," she said. "We've grown to love this place in a short amount of time."
Her appearance came amid a period where Patriots players and staff have had to publicly respond to questions surrounding head coach Mike Vrabel, who has been dealing with a personal controversy that led to him missing part of the NFL Draft. Vrabel has since returned but acknowledged further personal absences remain possible.
Year 3 is a pivotal one for Maye under center. Sunday gave a glimpse of what he is building beyond the game, a community presence that New England will likely lean on as the team tries to put a difficult offseason behind it.
