Elvin Abrea’s name echoed with shock across the racing world on Saturday. The 32-year-old jockey lost his life after a terrifying fall during a live race in the Philippines. What started as a normal race ended in heartbreak within seconds. Abrea was riding when he fell to the track and was tragically trampled by another horse in the Philippines. Officials later confirmed his death, leaving the racing community in deep sorrow.
The tragic accident happened during a race at the Hapi Jockey Club meet in Padre Garcia. Abrea was riding Fly With The Wind in a field of seven horses. As the race grew tight and fast, Abrea tried to move slightly to the right while surrounded by other riders. At that moment, his horse clipped the heels of Magnolia Ariana, which was being ridden by JL Paano. The contact caused Fly With The Wind to trip and fall, throwing Abrea hard onto the track.
Before anyone could react, another horse came charging from behind. With almost no time to turn away, the horse ran over Abrea as he lay on the ground. Medical teams rushed in, but the injuries were too severe. Officials later confirmed that Elvin Abrea died from the accident.
How Elvin Abrea’s fall happened during the race at Padre Garcia
A report from local stewards explained the incident in detail. It said the fall happened near the 1,000-meter mark of the race.
The report stated:
“Approaching the 1000 meter mark, EA Abrea (Fly With The Wind) was unseated. Stewards observed that Fly With The Wind clipped the heels of the horse Magnolia Ariana in front of him.”
When JL Paano was questioned, he shared his side clearly. He said:
“JL Paano explained that he did not feel anything and his mount was running a straight path.”
Soon after, an official statement confirmed the loss. Philippine Jockey Club released a message mourning Abrea’s death.
The statement read:
“The Philippine Jockey Club mourns the passing of jockey Abrea, who sadly passed away following a riding incident. We extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, fellow jockeys, trainers, and the entire racing community.”
It added:
“Jockey Abrea’s dedication, bravery, and passion for horse racing will be remembered with respect and gratitude. During this time of profound loss, the Philippine Jockey Club stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the racing community as we honour his life and service to the sport. Rest in peace, jockey Elvin Abrea.”
