Greg Biffle spotted mirror signal during Hurricane Helene rescue as rescue helicopter video resurfaces after his death

Greg Biffle’s final legacy is not just about racing. It is about saving lives. As the sports world mourns the tragic death of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, an emotional rescue video from Hurricane Helene has resurfaced online. The video shows Biffle flying his personal helicopter over the North Carolina mountains when he noticed a small mirror flashing in the distance. That mirror signal led him to a stranded survivor trapped deep in a canyon.

Greg Biffle, 55, died on Thursday in a plane crash in North Carolina. He was traveling with his wife Cristina Biffle, their teenage daughter Emma, and their five-year-old son Ryder. All four were killed. The other victims were Dennis Dutton, his son Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth. As tributes continue, many fans are remembering Biffle not only as a NASCAR star, but as a man who always showed up when people needed help the most.

The resurfaced video was filmed from inside Greg Biffle’s helicopter during Hurricane Helene last year. In the clip, Biffle explains how he spotted someone far away using a mirror to ask for help.




“The mirror that caught our attention well over a mile away,” Biffle wrote. “Only way we were able to find someone stranded in the mountains at bottom of steep canyon.”

Landing was not easy. The terrain was dangerous, and the weather was still rough. Biffle tried several times before succeeding.

“6 attempts to land due to difficulty but we got there,” he wrote. “Got him a chainsaw, EpiPens, insulin, chicken food, formula, gas, 2 stroke oil, and sandwiches premade from Harris Teeter before we left.”

Hurricane Helene caused around 250 deaths in the United States and left behind nearly $78 billion in damage. Later, Greg Biffle spoke about how fast everything grew.

“I had no idea at that point in time how devastating this storm was,” he said. “What started out to be rescuing one family, turned into 4,000 messages. It went viral.”

U.S. Representative Richard Hudson praised the family’s efforts on X.

“The Biffles flew hundreds of rescue missions in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene,” Hudson wrote. “The last time I spoke with Cristina, just a couple of weeks ago, she reached out to ask how she could help with relief efforts in Jamaica. That’s who the Biffles were.”

The tragedy became even harder after Cristina Biffle’s mother, Cathy Grossu, shared what happened just before the crash. Speaking to People, she said her daughter sent one final text.

“She texted me from the plane and she said, ‘We’re in trouble.’ And that was it,” Grossu said. “So we’re devastated. We’re brokenhearted.”

The Cessna C550 private jet crashed at Statesville Regional Airport around 10:15 a.m. The family was heading to Florida for a birthday trip.

“To think that they would be killed on a birthday trip,” Grossu said. “It was supposed to be such a fun time for the family. I cannot believe they’re gone.”
