Neymar's career has always been a mix of great and bad, and now the Brazilian star is openly thinking about what comes next. The 34-year-old forward says that the end may be closer than fans had hoped after years of amazing skill, constant injuries, and high expectations. Still, there is one last mission that is clear. He wants to help Brazil chase glory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before deciding whether his body and motivation can sustain another season.
The timing reflects both urgency and reflection. Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has spent much of the past two years fighting to regain rhythm after a serious knee injury, and each comeback has demanded patience. Now back with Santos, the club where his journey began, Neymar finds himself measuring ambition against reality while preparing for what could be his final chapter in international football.
Neymar hints at retirement after 2026 World Cup as injuries reshape Brazil star’s future
Neymar has not appeared for Brazil since October 2023, when he suffered a major knee injury against Uruguay. Surgery and rehabilitation slowed his momentum, and recurring setbacks have tested his endurance. Even after returning to Santos in early 2025, his first season was disrupted, followed by another knee procedure in December.
He made a cautious return as a second-half substitute in a Sao Paulo state championship match on February 16. The measured comeback underlined his current mindset.
“Obviously, I wanted to come back to help my team in the best way possible, but I ended up holding back a little so I could come back 100 per cent,” he said.
Despite his absence, Neymar remains Brazil’s record scorer with 79 goals, surpassing Pelé. Yet he has not been recalled since Carlo Ancelotti took charge of the national team, adding uncertainty to his international future.
Neymar is chasing World Cup dream before a possible farewell
While retirement is no longer unthinkable, Neymar insists the present season carries enormous weight.
“I don’t know what will happen from now on, I don’t know about next year,” he said. “It may be that when December comes, I’ll want to retire. I’m living year to year now.”
His focus, however, is fixed on one final objective.
“This year is a very important year, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team, as it’s a World Cup year, and for me too,” Neymar said. “So it’s a huge challenge.”
For a generation that grew up watching his fearless dribbles and match-winning flair, the coming months may define how Neymar’s story is remembered. The curtain may be approaching, but the final act could still deliver one last moment of magic.
