Italian sportswear brand Diadora launches groundbreaking NIL program offering $40,000 deals to high school milers
Italian sportswear brand Diadora has announced a bold new NIL program that could change high school track and field. The company has partnered with New England-based Marathon Sports to offer two high school athletes NIL deals worth $40,000 each. The offer targets elite mile performances during the 2025-26 indoor track season and has already created major buzz in the running world.
Under the program, the first high school boy to run the mile in under four minutes and the first high school girl to break 4:35 will earn the deals. Both performances must be achieved while wearing Diadora’s new Mezzofondo superspike. The initiative, called the “Mezzofondo Mile,” began on December 8, 2025, and runs through March 15, 2026, with approved 1600-meter conversions allowed.
Diadora believes its new spike gives athletes a real performance edge. Speaking to FloTrack, Diadora USA President and CEO Bryan Poerner explained the idea behind the program.
“Based on the data we’ve seen in our lab and feedback from our athletes, we truly believe that the Mezzofondo is the fastest distance spike in the world. That’s why we wanted to partner with Marathon Sports to put together a one-of-a-kind program that could reward some top high school milers with an incredible NIL opportunity”, he said.
The company says lab testing shows the shoe returns four per cent more energy than other top distance spikes. The Mezzofondo features a full-length carbon-filled plate and a highly responsive foam.
The mile standards reflect how fast high school running has become. Ryan Eckel, Diadora USA’s chief marketing officer, said, “We wanted to set it at this level that marks elite, elite achievement, but also is something that does get hit relatively consistently.”
The Mezzofondo spike costs $260 and is Diadora’s first major entry into the superspike market. It took two years to develop in Italy and even involved engineering input from Ducati.
Eckel added, “We’re not going to put a spike out there until we think it’s the best one on the market.”
College runner Marco Langon, Diadora’s first NIL athlete, has already seen results in early prototypes. He said, “Ever since I decided to fully embrace this sport, there has always been a sense of family… This is what I see in Diadora.”
For some high school runners, four indoor laps could now lead to a life-changing finish line!
