Justin Gaethje fires back at Paddy Pimblett after his nasty comments about Dustin Poirier before UFC 324
Justin Gaethje has strongly criticised Paddy Pimblett following comments aimed at UFC legends ahead of their highly anticipated fight. The two lightweights will face each other at UFC 324 in Las Vegas on Saturday night. An interim lightweight title is on the line, adding even more tension to the matchup.
While the fighters were respectful during an earlier press event last month, the tone changed at the final press conference. Gaethje was clearly angered after Pimblett mocked Dustin Poirier’s performance in his farewell bout against Max Holloway. The remarks touched a nerve, especially with talk growing about Gaethje nearing the final stage of his career.
Justin Gaethje did not hide his frustration when asked about Paddy Pimblett’s comments. He said he had been paying close attention to what Pimblett was saying and felt the Liverpool fighter sounded far too confident. Gaethje took issue with Pimblett showing a lack of respect toward fighters like Dustin Poirier. He warned that Pimblett’s attitude would cost him dearly on fight night and promised a dominant performance inside the cage.
Pimblett had earlier told TNT Sports that Poirier placed unnecessary pressure on himself by announcing his retirement before the Holloway fight. Pimblett said Poirier failed to live up to expectations and struggled badly over five rounds. He added that fighters should retire quietly instead of making public announcements, suggesting Poirier embarrassed himself in front of his home fans.
At Thursday’s press conference, Pimblett stood by his words. He explained that Poirier had never spoken positively about him, so he felt no reason to hold back. Pimblett insisted he was simply being honest and dismissed criticism of his comments.
Gaethje quickly responded, saying Pimblett would have looked just as bad if he had faced Max Holloway. The exchange added fuel to an already heated rivalry.
Despite his popularity, many fans and analysts continue to doubt Pimblett’s ability at the elite level. The 31-year-old earned his title shot after a knockout win over Michael Chandler last April. Gaethje, however, brings far more experience. He is a former interim champion and has been involved in several classic UFC battles. Although he has fallen short in two undisputed title fights, he enters this contest after a strong decision win over Rafael Fiziev in March.
