MMA star Alfie Davis was about to retire before his last-chance $500K gamble turned into PFL glory, bringing new home and career revival
Alfie Davis was close to walking away from mixed martial arts just a year ago. The 33-year-old lightweight felt time was running out and believed his fighting career had reached its limit. He entered the 2025 Professional Fighters League tournament with little expectation. For him, it was a final attempt to make something happen inside the cage. Instead of fading quietly, the London fighter produced one of the sport’s biggest underdog stories.
Few observers predicted Davis would even survive the opening round. He was matched with experienced former UFC contender Clay Collard and expected defeat. But the tournament quickly changed his mindset and confidence. One win led to another, and soon the outsider was fighting for the title. By the end of the season, Davis had a championship belt, a $500,000 prize and a life-changing moment that reshaped his future.
Alfie Davis admitted he entered the competition expecting an early loss. Speaking to The Sun, he said he originally believed Clay Collard would beat him and he treated the bout as a final opportunity to enjoy fighting. After winning the first fight, his belief grew. When he secured another victory, he realized he could go all the way and began trusting his own ability more than before.
He defeated Brent Primus in the semifinals in June. Then he shocked favorite Gadzhi Rabadanov in the final to win the PFL lightweight title and the large cash reward. The success allowed him to buy a new house for his wife and two sons. Davis explained the move felt surreal because the family had planned it but could not afford it earlier. He added that life stayed mostly normal, though people around him seemed happier and more excited for him.
The British fighter revealed that losing the tournament would have meant retirement. He said he had been thinking about regular work and stability because many friends his age already had long-term careers. Supporting his family was a major concern. The victory, however, let him continue doing what he loves.
Davis now faces another tough test in Dubai against PFL champion Usman Nurmagomedov, cousin of UFC legend Khabib. He believes he is again seen as the underdog but says defeating such a well-known opponent would be a huge achievement and the perfect reward for his years of effort in the sport.
