Natasha Watley “heartbroken” over Softball’s LA28 Olympics venue selection, opens up on her favorite Olympics village memory
The return of softball to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles was expected to be a joyful moment for former U.S. softball star Natasha Watley. The two-time Olympic medalist grew up in Los Angeles and played a key role in the success of United States women’s national softball team during her career. However, the excitement quickly turned into disappointment when organizers confirmed that the Olympic softball tournament would not be held in Los Angeles.
Instead of being played in California, the competition will take place in Oklahoma City, nearly 1,300 miles away. The decision was made because Olympic organizers wanted to use existing venues and avoid building new stadiums.
Organizers of the 2028 Summer Olympics decided to stage the Olympic softball tournament at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, one of the largest softball stadiums in the United States. The venue regularly hosts the Women’s College World Series and is widely considered one of the most famous softball stadiums in the sport.
However, the decision disappointed former Olympic star Natasha Watley, who believed Los Angeles would have been the perfect place to showcase the sport. Speaking at a Front Office Sports live event in Nashville, Watley said she felt emotional when she heard the news.
She explained that as someone who grew up in Los Angeles, she felt saddened by the decision. According to her, Southern California is one of the most important regions for softball. Many young players compete in travel leagues there, and she believes the Olympics missed an opportunity to celebrate that strong local softball culture.
The choice to move the event was largely influenced by cost and infrastructure concerns. When Los Angeles secured the Olympic bid, officials promised to rely mostly on existing venues. Hosting softball in Southern California would have required converting a professional or minor league baseball stadium into a softball field.
Watley also highlighted how the location change could affect the Olympic experience for athletes. She said one of the most memorable parts of her own Olympic journey was returning to the Olympic Village after games and seeing legendary athletes like Michael Phelps celebrating their achievements. She believes future softball players may miss those special moments because they will be competing far from the main Olympic hub.
Despite her disappointment, Watley still sees the bigger picture. She said bringing softball back to the Olympics remains very important for the sport’s future.
