Olympic champion Alysa Liu issues urgent plea to fans after frightening airport incident following her historic Milan Winter Olympics gold
Alysa Liu made history at the Milan Winter Olympics. The 20-year-old American figure skater won gold with a stunning free skate to Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park.” Her victory ended a 24-year drought for U.S. women in Olympic figure skating. But soon after returning home, Alysa Liu faced a moment that left her shaken. The Olympic champion took to Instagram Stories and asked fans to respect her personal space after a troubling situation at the airport.
According to E! News, Liu said a group of people surrounded her with cameras and even chased her toward her car when she landed. The moment was very different from the cheerful welcome she received earlier. Despite the scary experience, Liu’s Olympic win has made her one of the most talked about athletes in the country. Fans have celebrated her everywhere she goes, but the young skater says she still hopes to keep her life calm and private while adjusting to sudden fame.
Alysa Liu shared her concerns directly with fans on social media after the airport incident. On Instagram Stories, she wrote, “So I land at the airport & there’s a crowd waiting at the exit with cameras & things for me to sign. All up in my personal space. Someone chased me to my car bruh. Please do not do that to me.”
The message surprised many fans because Liu is usually known for her warm and cheerful personality. During competitions and interviews, she often smiles, jokes with fans, and interacts kindly with the crowd.
Since returning from the Milano Cortina Olympics, her schedule has been very busy. After winning the women’s figure skating final on February 19 in Milan, Liu quickly became one of the biggest stars in the sport.
When she landed at San Francisco International Airport, people gathered to welcome her home. Airport staff even gave her gifts, and Delta flight attendants made a special announcement on the plane.
They said, “Ladies and gentlemen, today we welcome home a true champion after representing us with courage, dedication and excellence. Please join me in celebrating our gold medalist, Alysa Liu, who brought home the gold from the Olympic Games.”
Her week after returning from Italy has been packed with appearances. Liu visited New York City for several media events. She appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and also visited the Today show.
During the visit to the Today show, she had a special fan moment when she met actor Daniel Radcliffe. She also went to the Lyceum Theatre to watch Simu Liu perform in the play Oh, Mary! and later appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue.
Even with all the celebrations, Liu has said that privacy is very important to her. In February, she told E! News, “I want my life to stay as similar as possible every way and no one has thought that it would, but I’m really going to try to keep my peace because I like my life.”
She added, “I don’t want it to be too chaotic. I want it to stay calm and peaceful and chill. Honestly, I would say privacy. Privacy for sure. Privacy is a big one.”
Sadly, this is not the first time Liu’s privacy has been affected. In 2022, before the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Associated Press reported that Liu and her father Arthur Liu were targeted by individuals connected to a foreign spy operation.
According to reports, several people were found surveilling the Liu family in the months leading up to the Games. At the time, her father spoke strongly about protecting his daughter. He said, “This is her moment. This is her once in a lifetime opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games.”
Arthur Liu also said he would not allow anyone to prevent her from attending and would do everything possible to ensure her safety. Even as Alysa Liu celebrates one of the most significant moments of her career, the young Olympic champion continues to ask the public for one simple thing: respect for her personal space.
