Alejandro Tosti grabbed attention at the Valspar Championship, but not just for his golf. The PGA Tour player came up with a funny and unusual idea. He tried to find a wife while walking the course. He even shared it openly with fans. What started as a light joke quickly turned into a talking point among spectators. Some people laughed, some were confused, and many joined in on the fun.
Tosti later said the idea began when volunteers asked him a simple question about his personal life. He told them he was single, and from there, things took a turn. Soon, people around the course were talking about it, taking photos, and even joking with his caddie.
Despite all the noise, Tosti stayed focused on his game. He finished his first round at even par at the Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida. That left him seven shots behind early leader Sungjae Im after day one.
Alejandro Tosti’s Valspar Championship plan to find a wife creates mix up with caddie Ali as fans react
As the week went on, Alejandro Tosti explained how his plan actually played out. In a video shared by the PGA Tour, he said, “The ladies that volunteer here were asking me, ‘Do you have a wife?’ I said, ‘No,’ and it came from there.”
But things did not go exactly as he expected. Many fans thought his caddie, Ali, was the one looking for a wife. Tosti said, “A lot of people were asking if it was my caddie that was needing a wife, but, no, it’s actually me.”
Because of that confusion, Ali became part of the joke too. People took pictures with him and kept asking questions. Tosti said it was all fun and that everyone enjoyed the moment.
He even gave a playful “sales pitch” about himself. “I offer a lot of good stuff. I love cooking. I fly planes. I can play golf and have fun,” he said.
While this was happening off the course, the tournament itself had its own stories. Many players used creative names on their caddies’ bibs. Ben Griffin went with “Benny Booms.” Brian Campbell used “Soup.” Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen picked “Moose.” Karl Vilips had “Koala,” and Frankie Capan III chose “Beef.”
Some players added emotional touches. Justin Thomas had his caddie wear “Molly’s Dad,” while Aaron Rai used his mother’s name, Dalvir Shukla.
On the course, Alejandro Tosti stayed steady. He made 18 straight pars in the opening round, which kept him at even par. It was a calm and consistent start, even if it did not push him near the top of the leaderboard right away.
At the same time, Sungjae Im took the early lead after round one. Tosti now heads into the next round looking to improve his score while still enjoying the lighter side of the week.
