The accident happened on Monday morning on the Lagos–Ogun expressway, according to officials from Ogun State. The Lexus vehicle, in which Anthony Joshua was traveling, collided with a heavy-duty truck on the road.
The impact was severe and caused major damage to the car. Authorities confirmed that two male foreign nationals died instantly at the scene.
Their bodies were later moved to the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Anthony Joshua survived the crash and did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to preliminary medical reports.
Social media images showed Anthony Joshua being assisted from the wreckage by bystanders and emergency workers.
He appeared shaken and in visible pain but was conscious. Medical teams arrived quickly and transported him to a nearby hospital for further examination.
British broadcaster Piers Morgan shared the news on X, writing: “BREAKING NEWS: Boxing champion Anthony Joshua has survived a deadly car crash in Nigeria that killed two people. He was a passenger in a Lexus when it reportedly smashed into a truck.”
Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, confirmed the incident through a public statement. He said emergency services were sent to the scene immediately after the crash was reported.
In a post shared online, Omotosho wrote that the Ogun State Government was mourning the victims of the crash and expressed condolences to their families.
He added that Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were rescued alive and received medical care soon after the accident.
Officials also confirmed that the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police are reviewing road conditions, vehicle speed, and traffic movement at the time of the collision. No arrests have been announced so far.
Anthony Joshua remains under medical observation in Nigeria. Authorities have not released further details about his condition but confirmed he avoided serious injuries.
