Coco Gauff's parents remain the driving force behind her rise, long before the world noticed her greatness. When she stunned Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019, it felt sudden to everyone else. Inside her family, it felt like a promise being fulfilled. “My dad told me I could do this when I was eight, and obviously, you never believe it,” Coco said that summer. Corey and Candi Gauff had already rearranged their lives around a belief their daughter was still learning to trust.Coco Gauff's parents never stepped away, even as the wins grew bigger and the spotlight brighter. They watched her claim the 2023 US Open, her first Grand Slam, through tears and disbelief. “Thank you, first, to my parents. Today was the first time I've ever seen my dad cry,” Coco said. “Thank you guys, you believed in me from the beginning. My dad took me to this tournament. [I watched] Venus and Serena compete, so it's really incredible to be on this stage.” It was not just her victory. It belonged to all of them.

Coco Gauff's parents sacrificed careers and comfort to build her path from childhood to champion

Corey and Candi understood sports long before Coco held a racket. Corey played college basketball at Georgia State.
Candi competed in track and field at Florida State, where her heptathlon score still stands among the program’s best. Their experience gave them perspective, and patience.“I think it helps parents when they have played as high as college or even pro,” Corey said. “You better understand the process, and so you don’t get too jittery about it. You don’t feel like you’re running out of time, so you are not rushed. You kind of meet your kid where they are at.”

They made decisions many parents would hesitate to make. When Coco was in second grade, they left Atlanta and returned to Delray Beach so she could train seriously. Candi gave up her teaching job to homeschool her. Corey eventually left his role in healthcare to coach her full time. He once joked they went from a single income to no income, but the gamble never felt reckless. It felt necessary.Their belief stayed steady as Coco’s career accelerated. She became the youngest champion at the DC Open in 2023, then won Cincinnati, and soon after lifted the US Open trophy. In 2025, when she added the French Open, her mother reflected on the fight behind the moment. “She never gave up, she fought to the end, and she allowed herself to hold up the trophy.”At home, Coco remains part of a close, competitive family that includes her younger brothers Cody and Cameron. Her parents have always reminded their children of their potential. “You come from a lineage who has done great things. We wouldn’t put [anything] on you that hasn’t been done [already],” Candi said.

Even now, Corey manages his nerves in his own way, sometimes pacing the halls instead of watching. Coco understands. “He has some reactions where if I look in the box I want positivity and I will see him go like this [head in hand] or [slap his thigh],” she admitted. “He does not mean it. So after Wimbledon I lost first round [in 2023] and was like, ‘Okay dad, we both agreed that you shouldn’t sit in the box. We can go at it, because I just can’t with the reactions.’ ”The world sees trophies. Coco still sees the same two people who told her, long ago, that she could.
