Fans and analysts have started paying close attention to her matches. Eala has shown that she can challenge experienced players on the biggest stages. One of the moments that pushed her into the spotlight came during the 2025 Miami Open, where her performance surprised many in the tennis world. Since then, her matches have started drawing bigger crowds, and her name is becoming familiar to more fans around the world.
Alex Eala’s rapid rise in tennis from junior champion to WTA breakthrough star
Eala’s breakthrough moment came during the 2025 Miami Open. Entering the tournament as a wildcard, she produced a run that few expected. At just 19 years old, she defeated Ostapenko, Keys and Swiatek in straight sets. Her run ended in the semifinals after a loss to Jessica Pegula, but by then the tennis world had already noticed her. That performance made history. Eala became the first wildcard to defeat three major champions in straight sets at the same WTA event. She also became the first Filipino woman in the Open Era to defeat a major champion at tour level. After the tournament, she entered the top 100 rankings for the first time and later climbed to No. 50 by the end of the 2025 season.
The momentum continued in 2026 at the Indian Wells Open. Eala reached the fourth round before losing to Linda Noskova. One of the most memorable matches of that event came against Dayana Yastremska. The contest lasted two hours and 43 minutes, becoming the longest match of the day. Eala later spoke about the support she received from the crowd.
“For them to make the effort to stay up late and stay in the cold and cheer me on, it really added to the feelings and the emotions,” she said after the match.
Eala’s journey started early. She turned professional in 2020 at age 14 and quickly began winning junior tournaments. One of her biggest junior achievements came at the 2022 US Open, where she became the first Filipino player to win a junior Grand Slam singles title.
Sports also run deep in her family. Her mother, Rizza Maniego Eala, won a bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games. Her brother, Miko Eala, is also connected to the sport and trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy. With her rapid progress, many believe Eala could soon become one of the biggest names in women’s tennis.
