Dave Ryding is one of the most respected names in British winter sports. The alpine skier, known as “The Rocket”, is competing in his final Olympic season at Milano Cortina 2026. He has represented Great Britain at five Winter Games. Ryding learned to ski on dry slopes in Lancashire. Despite that unusual start, he reached the very top level of the sport and inspired many young British athletes.

While his achievements on the slopes are famous, fans are also curious about his personal life. The 39-year-old has often spoken about family being his biggest support. At the centre of that support is his wife, Mandy Dirkzwager. She has followed his career closely and understands the pressures of elite competition. Who is Dave Ryding’s wife, Mandy Dirkzwager?

Mandy Dirkzwager is a Dutch former skier. She met Dave Ryding through their shared love of skiing. The couple dated for almost ten years before they got married on May 14, 2022. Their wedding had been delayed by two years because of the pandemic.

Since Dirkzwager also competed in skiing, she understands training routines, travel demands, and race pressure. This helped her support Ryding during difficult seasons and injuries. In 2019, the couple started a business together. They opened Boskins Cafe in Tarleton near Southport. The cafe became popular with locals. One of its well-known menu items is the “Rocket Ryding Breakfast”.

The pair welcomed their daughter Nina in June 2022. Fatherhood changed Ryding’s priorities. Speaking about his career decision, speaking to the Olympics' official website, he explained, “I only want to race while I can still match the top athletes. Now feels like the right moment, and it lets me give everything one final time.” He also admitted the approaching end motivates him. “I know the season has an endpoint, so I push myself forward instead of thinking about fatigue”, he discussed.

Ryding has also spoken about family life. He said, “My daughter will start school soon. I want to focus on being a dad and a husband, and at 39 it feels like the proper moment to step away.”

After retirement, Ryding plans to spend more time with Mandy and Nina. His career may be ending, but their partnership continues beyond the slopes.
