Why have Rotherham United parted ways with manager Matt Hamshaw amid relegation battle and heavy defeat to Peterborough United?
Rotherham United have dismissed manager Matt Hamshaw after a crushing 5-0 defeat to Peterborough United. The loss has left the club in 22nd place in League One. They are now six points away from safety with only nine matches left in this season. The decision was taken quickly after the result, which has increased fears of relegation for the struggling side.
In a statement, the club described the decision as tough but necessary given the current situation. Rotherham’s poor run of form has put them under serious pressure in the recent past weeks. The team has managed to win only a few games this season. With time running out, the club believes a change in leadership could improve their chances of staying in the division.
In an official statement, the Rotherham United club explained that removing Matt Hamshaw was not an easy choice, especially considering his long association with the team. However, they felt a managerial change was much required to give the club the strongest possible chance of avoiding relegation. The decision reflects the urgency of their current position in the league table.
Hamshaw, 44, had been part of the club setup for several years. He first joined in 2012 and worked in different roles before leaving in 2022. He later returned as interim manager after Steve Evans was sacked. After a short spell, he was given the job on a permanent basis and signed a three-year deal.
Despite his early promises, the club’s results did not improve. Rotherham United have won just nine league games this season. Their recent form has been especially poor, with only one win in their last nine matches. That major victory came against Exeter in a 4-0 result, but the momentum did not last.
The heavy defeat against Peterborough proved to be the final blow. The team conceded early goals through Kyrell Lisbie and Jimmy-Jay Morgan. In the second half, two penalties from David Kamara and a goal from Archie Collins completed the rout.
For now, coaches Dale Tonge, Richard Wood, and Andy Warrington will take charge on a temporary basis. The club has started the search for a new manager who can guide them through the final crucial matches of the season.
