The
Chicago Cubs made a major move by trading for right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins. The deal strengthens the rotation immediately and gives the front office more room to work with heading into the rest of the offseason.
That flexibility matters. With pitching addressed, the Cubs are now better positioned to chase a high-end infielder, most notably free agent Bo Bichette. The timing of the move has only added fuel to speculation that Chicago is preparing to make a serious push to upgrade its infield for 2026.
What Edward Cabrera Brings to Chicago Cubs
Edward Cabrera is coming off his best major league season. In 2025, he posted a 3.53 ERA across 137 2/3 innings, striking out 25.8 percent of hitters while cutting his walk rate to a career-low 8.3 percent. At 27, he looks closer to a finished product than a project.
The Chicago Cubs sent outfielder Owen Caissie, infielder Cristian Hernandez, and corner infielder Edgardo De Leon to Miami. Caissie was the organization’s top prospect, while Hernandez ranked 11th. In return, Chicago gets a starter under arbitration control through 2028, with Cabrera projected to earn about $3.7 million in 2026.
He joins a rotation that includes Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd, Jameson Taillon, and Shota Imanaga, with Justin Steele rehabbing from UCL surgery. The deal also clears an estimated $15–20 million in payroll space.
Why Bo Bichette Is Now in Play
With money freed up, attention has shifted to Bo Bichette. The 27-year-old can play shortstop, second base, or third base, which fits a Cubs infield that has questions beyond 2026. Nico Hoerner is nearing free agency, and Matt Shaw had an uneven rookie season.

Bichette rebounded in 2025, hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI. He is expected to command a five-year deal in the $150–200 million range. His contact-heavy approach and line-drive swing should play well at Wrigley Field.

For the Chicago Cubs, Cabrera provides affordable rotation depth and opens the door for a major offensive addition. For the Marlins, the return adds young hitters without adding payroll. If Chicago follows this move with a Bichette signing, the Cubs shift from fringe contenders to a more complete team heading into 2026.
