Gio Urshela began his MLB career with difficult spells at the Cleveland Guardians and Toronto Blue Jays before finally finding stability with the Yankees. New York acquired him from Toronto in 2018 in exchange for cash considerations, and that move completely changed his career.

From 2019 through 2021, Urshela became one of the Yankees’ most reliable infielders. During that stretch, he played 291 games and recorded 296 hits, 41 home runs, 153 RBIs, a .292 batting average, and an .815 OPS. His strong defense and calm personality also made him a fan favorite in the Bronx.

In his Instagram statement, Urshela opened up about how emotional the decision was for him.

“Today is the day. The day you never dream about, the day you never imagine, the day you never expect to come… but deep down you know that one day it will arrive,” Urshela wrote.

“Today is the day to close this chapter as a professional player, and this is not a moment to be sad, it is a moment to be grateful to God for allowing me to play this beautiful sport that changed my life.”

He also thanked his family for standing beside him during the difficult moments of his career.

“To my parents and brothers, whom I love so much, thank you for everything, for being there during those difficult moments that we were able to overcome together,” he added.

Urshela later shared a heartfelt message for his children, writing, “Dad will no longer have to spend so much time away from home. You have no idea how happy I am to finally spend more time with you.”

Soon after the post went live, tributes started pouring in. The Yankees replied, “Congratulations on a fantastic career, Gio!! Wishing you all the best in this next chapter.” Colombian singer J Balvin also commented with a simple message: “Respect.”
