“I thought I was in trouble”: Dodgers prank turns sweet as Dave Roberts gifts Shohei Ohtani’s daughter a little pink Porsche

Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts gifted Shohei Ohtani's newborn daughter a pink toy Porsche, continuing a playful joke that began when Ohtani broke Roberts' home run record. This sweet gesture follows Ohtani's earlier gift of a toy Porsche to Roberts and a real Porsche to Ashley Kelly, highlighting the camaraderie within the Dodgers organization.

A fun gift exchange between two Los Angeles Dodgers stars is warming hearts. Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ manager, recently gave a very special gift to Shohei Ohtani’s newborn daughter. The gift? A pink toy Porsche. The moment was captured in a video and shared by Shohei Ohtani on his Instagram page. This sweet gesture follows a light-hearted joke that started between the two men last season.

Dave Roberts surprises Shohei Ohtani’s baby with playful Porsche gift

On Wednesday, June 5, 2025, during a press talk in Los Angeles, Dave Roberts shared the story behind the pink toy car. The idea came from a running joke between him and Shohei Ohtani. He said, “We had a little running practical-joke situation going on, but this was a gift for the baby.” Shohei Ohtani replied, “I thought I was in trouble.”
Dave Roberts and his wife Tricia Roberts gifted the mini pink Porsche after Shohei Ohtani and his wife Mamiko Tanaka welcomed their first child on April 19, 2025. While the couple has not shared their daughter’s name, this thoughtful gift added a warm and funny moment to their new chapter as parents.Ohtani’s reaction? “He was very grateful,” Roberts said while smiling.
The fun exchange also shows the strong bond between the Dodgers teammates and staff. Also Read: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani eyes third consecutive MVP award with red- hot performance in MLB

Sweet continuation of the Porsche prank between Shohei Ohtani and Dave Roberts

This was not the first time a toy Porsche made its way into the Dodgers' clubhouse. The joke started in May 2024, when Shohei Ohtani broke the Dodgers’ record for most home runs by a Japanese player. The record was earlier held by Dave Roberts, who was born in Japan and played for the Dodgers during his MLB career. At the time, Roberts joked that Ohtani should gift him a real Porsche. Instead, Ohtani gave him a purple toy Porsche for his office. He later placed another toy car in Roberts’ parking spot at Camelback Ranch in Arizona during spring training in March 2025.This playful gifting didn’t stop there. Back in December 2023, when Ohtani joined the Dodgers, he gifted Ashley Kelly, wife of Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly, a real Porsche. This was a thank-you gift after Joe Kelly gave up his jersey number 17 so Ohtani could wear it.
