Tatsuya Imai has become the most talked-about pitcher this week after new reports said the San Francisco Giants are now leading the chase to sign him. This update came on Wednesday during the Just Baseball Media show, where hosts Peter Appel and Jack McMullen spoke about possible landing spots for the Japanese star.
The New York Yankees, valued at $8.2 billion by Forbes, were expected to be the strongest team in the race. But a fresh ESPN survey of 16 MLB executives now places the Giants on top. The Giants received five votes, while the Yankees received three, showing a clear shift toward San Francisco. The Los Angeles Dodgers also got three votes, while the Chicago Cubs got two, and the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres received one each.
Peter Appel and Jack McMullen explain why the San Francisco Giants fit Tatsuya Imai
When Peter Appel and Jack McMullen discussed Tatsuya Imai’s future on Wednesday, Jack McMullen said at the 2:30 mark that the Giants should be the “runaway train” in this race.
He said Tatsuya Imai recently spoke about wanting to beat the best team in baseball, which he believes is the Los Angeles Dodgers. McMullen said the Giants give him the best chance to do that.
Peter Appel agreed and said new Giants GM Buster Posey has an easy pitch to make: “Come here and help us beat the Dodgers.”
Appel added that he now sees the Giants as the front-runners, with the Yankees and the Blue Jays following behind.
Appel also pointed out that the Blue Jays may not push as hard because they already have Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Jose Berrios in their rotation. That is why he placed the New York Yankees behind the Giants.
One MLB executive also told ESPN, “Pairing Imai with Logan Webb makes a ton of sense.” Another executive said the Dodgers should never be counted out because of their strong history with Japanese players.
Tatsuya Imai’s own comments also helped the Giants. In his interview with MLB.com reporters Michael Clair and Ayako Oikawa, he said he would rather try to beat the Dodgers than join them.
He said, “Winning against a team like that and becoming a world champion would be the most valuable thing in my life. If anything, I’d rather take them down.”
Since the San Francisco Giants face the Los Angeles Dodgers many times each season in the NL West, they offer the exact challenge Tatsuya Imai wants.
With a 1.92 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 2025, he is one of the top pitchers available, and many executives now believe the San Francisco Giants are in the strongest position to sign him.
