Sanal erases Subash's 37-year-old record in Calicut varsity meet

Sanal Scaria of Christ College, Irinjalakuda erased one of the longest standing records when he leapt to new distance in men's triple jump event of the final day of the 50th Calicut University Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championship at University Stadium, Tenhjipalam on Wednesday.
Former national school champion and national junior No. 2 in 2016, Sanal's leap of 15.63m bettered former international and current national junior coach Subash George's meet record of 15.62m set in 1981.However, the performance is far below his personal best of 15.98m set in state meet in Thiruvananthapuram last year. Monu BM of Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur (14.83m) and Safad PM of MES, Kalladi (14.65m) were second and third.
Five more meet records were bettered on the final day with the best performance coming from Sahad NS of St Thomas College, Thrissur in men's 110m hurdles. He clocked 14.51 seconds improving the old record of 14.85s set by Maymon Poulose in 2016. His college mate Sooryanarayanan VS (14.65s) also bettered existing meet record and won silver while Akshay R of Government College Chittur (14.86s) won bronze medal.

Athira, Alphonsa girls to the fore in MG varsity meet
Athira Somaraj has been competing for the past several years and winning minor medals. On Wednesday in the final day of the 36th Mahatma Gandhi University Athletics Championship at Pala Municipal stadium, the final year degree physics student of Alphonsa College, Pala soared to new heights in girl's high jump event. She not only entered the record books for the first time she also won the gold for the first with a new height of 1.77m shattering the old mark of 1.73m set by Tintu ND in 2009. Anju Babu also of Alphonsa (1.60m) and Aswathy Shajan of MA College, Kothamangalam (1.55m) were second and third, respectively.
In girls 200m, Simi NS of Alphonsa clocked new timing of 23.71 seconds erasing old mark of 23.90s set by Anilda Thomas in 2014. Emily KT of Alphonsa (25.04s) and Anjali Johnson of Assumption College, Changanaserry (25.42s) were second and third.
Meanwhile Alphonsa College, Pala with 201 points also emerged champions in women's category.
