J.R. Smith is a former basketball player in the NBA. Smith began playing basketball really young when he was pursuing his high school education at Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in New Jersey. Smith entered the big league in 2004 by the New Orleans Hornets, as their 18th overall pick. Thereafter, he went on to play with the Denver Nuggets, followed by the New Year Knicks, then the Cleveland Cavaliers, in which he played an important role in the franchise's championship run in 2016, alongside LeBron James, followed by another victory in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smith has also spent one year in the Chinese Basketball Association from 2011-2012, playing for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls franchise, where he became a CBA scoring champion in 2012, and also won an All-Star honor. J.R. Smith's best years were with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he helped win the NBA championship in 2016, as their point guard. However, despite having a very successful career, his one decision shocked not only his fans and people across the big league. In 2020, Smith left the NBA. And a year later, in 2021, he took an unexpected turn by getting himself enrolled at the North Carolina A&T State University, in order to pursue his lifetime, dream of playing golf, while also getting his degree done.

How life after the NBA became a winning move for J.R. Smith?

J.R. Smith left basketball in 2020, after winning the 2020 NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. Speaking about his decision, Smith later reflected on his decision by explaining that it was a new start for him and a way for him to use his sportsmanship spirit to focus on something that he truly loves. Soon after enrolling at North Carolina A&T University in 2021, Smith joined the University's golf team. However, he not only did well on the court, but also excelled academically, earning a 4.0 GPA during his first year in college, which earned him the Academic Athlete of the Year honors.
“It’s hard because they say golf is a game of misses, and I come from a game of makes. You make shots, or you miss shots, but golf is about perfecting where your misses are", Smith spoke on his shift from basketball. Smith also explained how golf has been a way to relax while also teaching him patience.

How J.R. Smith turned his bold reinvention into success beyond the NBA

Speaking about his NBA journey, J.R. Smith has said that he was “100 percent blackballed” from the big league, meaning it didn't provide much opportunities outside of basketball, due to the reputation the association holds, thus, this new journey gave him a sense of peace and direction towards life, helping him understand the value of representation for oneself rather than caring about what others thought. “To do it at an HBCU means everything. Kids who look like me get to see that I’m taking my education seriously, and hopefully that inspires them to do the same", Smith once spoke about his experience. Overall, Smith's journey has been a powerful life lesson to learn from, showing that success doesn't just end with sports and that growth could come even beyond the game.
