Kevin Durant didn't back down. As the boos poured in during warmups, he brought his hands to his mouth and booed right back at the audience, grinning from ear to ear. The moment reached its height when he yelled toward the stands, "Boo to you too, motha-----,".


ESPN sideline reporter confirmed the levity, "KD was clearly playing, though, and according to ESPN's Mike Wright, the fans were laughing too." Posts on social media amplified the moment, "Kevin Durant booing the OKC crowd— KD is a menace. ������" with video evidence. Legion Hoops echoed: "Kevin Durant is booing the OKC crowd before the game ����."


Why did Durant respond this way? It is linked to his history of having the villain role. In the Mirror US's October 21 coverage, Durant told reporters pre-tipoff that he anticipated the reaction and welcomed it as motivation, "It's part of the game. They've earned their cheers tonight, and I've earned my boos. Let's play."

This aligns with his August social media taunt inviting boos. One user on X has posted, "Obviously..... everyone boo'd Kevin Durant. This night has everything for Thunder fans. Unreal."

The animosity surfaced early on ring night. As the Thunder celebrated their 2025 title—their first since relocating from Seattle—fans arrived with clear intentions. During player introductions, the arena erupted in cheers for returning hero Steven Adams, now with Houston, who received a standing ovation for his gritty tenure from 2013-2021. "The roaring cheers for Steven Adams followed by the loud boos for Kevin Durant, never change Thunder fans. That was incredible," ESPN's Brooke Pryor tweeted from the courtside.


The boos intensified during warmups. Television cameras captured Durant shooting free throws amid a chorus of jeers, a scene ClutchPoints reporter described in a video post, "From the ovation for former Thunder center Steven Adams to the loud boos for Kevin Durant. We’re moments away from tip-off here at the Paycom Center.".

Newsweek reported that fans voiced displeasure during pregame drills, while the Houston Chronicle noted boos at his introduction, where Durant earned seven All-Star nods in OKC. Larry Brown Sports called it "predictably" loud, with Durant "deciding to return the favor.".
