India vs New Zealand Highlights, 2nd ODI: Daryl Mitchell's heroics lead Kiwis to series-levelling victory

IND vs NZ Highlights, 2nd ODI: New Zealand produced a composed all-round performance to defeat India by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday, levelling the three-match series 1-1. On a sluggish surface, the visitors adapted far better than the hosts, successfully chasing down a target of 285 to finish at 286 for three in 47.3 overs.

Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer, scoring a magnificent 131 not out off 117 balls. He showcased excellent control and versatility, especially with his sweep shots, to register his third ODI century against India.

Will Young played a crucial supporting role, scoring a fluent 87 off 98 deliveries. The pair stitched together a match-defining 162-run partnership for the second wicket, batting with patience and clarity as the required rate hovered above six an over.

A dropped catch by Prasidh Krishna when Mitchell was on 80 proved expensive and allowed the New Zealand batter to take the game away from India.

India’s spin attack struggled once again on home turf. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja conceded 126 runs from 18 overs for just one wicket, while New Zealand’s spinners were far more effective. Debutant left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox returned figures of 1 for 42 from 10 overs, and Michael Bracewell chipped in with 1 for 34, keeping India in check through the middle overs.

Earlier, India posted 284 for seven, thanks largely to KL Rahul’s gritty unbeaten 112 off 91 balls. Rahul held the innings together after India slipped from 99 for one to 118 for four. Captain Shubman Gill scored 56 but fell to a mistimed pull, while Virat Kohli was bowled for 23 and Shreyas Iyer departed cheaply. Ravindra Jadeja added 27 in a vital 73-run stand with Rahul.

Despite early pressure from Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj, New Zealand remained composed to seal the chase comfortably. The series-deciding third ODI will be played in Indore on Sunday.

IND vs NZ Live Score: Innings report
KL Rahul struck a resolute 112 to guide India to a competitive 284 for seven on a slow surface in the second ODI against New Zealand at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday. Under pressure for large parts of the innings, Rahul’s calm presence ensured India finished strongly after a shaky middle phase.

Asked to bat first, India began positively as Rohit Sharma and captain Shubman Gill added 70 runs for the opening wicket. Rohit made 24, while Gill followed up his good form with a fluent 56. However, New Zealand’s spinners pulled things back with disciplined bowling, choking the run flow through the middle overs.

Virat Kohli (23) and Ravindra Jadeja (27) showed promise but failed to convert their starts, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with a quick 20 off 21 balls. India slipped to 115/3 at one stage before Rahul dug deep, absorbing pressure and rebuilding the innings with calculated risk.

Rahul paced his knock expertly, rotating strike when boundaries were hard to come by and capitalising when the bowlers erred. His century, laced with patience and composure, helped India post a total that looked competitive given the conditions.

Earlier, India made one change, bringing in seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy after Washington Sundar was ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a left rib injury. New Zealand won the toss and elected to field.

Reflecting on the conditions, Gill admitted India would have preferred batting first, noting the pitch tends to slow down as the innings progresses. He also praised the fast bowlers for making an impact during the middle overs in the series opener.

New Zealand handed a debut to left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox, with captain Michael Bracewell stressing the importance of maintaining pressure through the middle overs. With India already leading the three-match series 1-0, the visitors now face a stiff chase on a testing surface.

IND vs NZ Live: Kohli dethrones Rohit
Kohli dethrones Rohit to reclaim top spot in ODI rankings

India batter Virat Kohli regained the No. 1 position, dethroning his teammate Rohit Sharma, who slipped to the No. 3 spot in the latest men's rankings, following India's four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI.

Kohli's score of 93 off 91 balls helped the hosts complete the chase, bringing him closer to India legend Sachin Tendulkar and moving him into second place on the all-time men’s international run-scoring list. He has been in excellent form since the 50-over series in Australia, scoring 74 not out, 135, 102, 65 not out, and 93 in his last five matches.

The 37-year-old batting stalwart has returned to the top of the batting charts for the first time since July 2021, after his performance helped India chase down New Zealand’s 300-run target in Vadodara.

Kohli first reached the top ranking in October 2013, marking his 11th stint at the top. To date, he has held the position for a total of 825 days, making it the 10th longest overall and the longest for any Indian.

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell moved up in the ODI rankings after scoring a powerful 84 off 71 in the first ODI, achieving his highest rating with only one point behind Kohli.

The Black Caps player has been in impressive form, having held the No.1 spot, with three half-centuries in his last five ODIs and a century against the West Indies.

Mitchell's teammate Devon Conway moved up three spots to reach 29th position as he maintains his run-scoring at the top.

In the ODI bowlers ranking update, Mohammed Siraj's excellent performance helped him ascend five spots to reach 15th place, tying with Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Pacer Kyle Jamieson also benefited after achieving his career-best bowling performance, taking four wickets against India. This performance moved him up 27 spots to share the 69th position with India bowler Arshdeep Singh.

Several Australian players improved their positions in the latest Test rankings after the conclusion of the Ashes series, with Travis Head climbing seven spots to reach third place after becoming the top scorer in the high-profile Test series against England, where he scored 629 runs with an average of 62.90, including three centuries.

Other Test gainers include Jacob Bethell, who advanced 25 spots to share the 52nd position with Tom Blundell, thanks to his impressive maiden Test century in the final Ashes Test, and Michael Neser, who moved up seven spots to 47th following a strong performance in Sydney.

Beau Webster experienced a rise in rankings across all three departments following an outstanding all-round performance in the Ashes finale. His batting ranking improved six places to 58th, his bowling ranking jumped 29 places to 80th—alongside Justin Greaves—and he climbed 22 places to 26th in the all-rounder rankings, where Simon Harmer is also listed.

Wanindu Hasaranga's performance in the series-drawing T20I against Pakistan helped him move up three spots to second place in the latest T20I bowler rankings.

Pakistan pacer Salman Mirza also made a leap, climbing 16 spots to 19th after taking three wickets in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sahibzada Farhan's key contributions with the bat elevated him to fifth position, an increase of one spot, and captain Salman Agha advanced 13 spots to reach 41st.

In the all-rounders list, Saim Ayub dropped one position, allowing Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza to reclaim the top spot in the latest rankings update.

IND vs NZ Highlights, 2nd ODI: New Zealand outplayed India on a slow surface to register a seven-wicket win in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, levelling the three-match series 1-1. Chasing 285, the visitors finished at 286 for three in 47.3 overs, led by a brilliant unbeaten 131 from Daryl Mitchell.

Will Young supported him with a composed 87 as the pair added 162 runs for the second wicket. India’s spinners struggled to make an impact, conceding heavily, while New Zealand’s slower bowlers controlled the middle overs.

Earlier, India managed 284 for seven largely due to KL Rahul’s fighting 112 not out, which held the innings together after a mid-innings collapse.

Shubman Gill scored 56, but Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply. A dropped catch when Mitchell was on 80 proved costly as New Zealand stayed calm to seal the chase.

The series decider will be played in Indore.
