Heartwarming homecoming as Stephen Curry is honored by Davidson with highway tribute ahead of Golden State Warriors–Charlotte Hornets clash

In the last game of their three-game East Coast road trip to wrap off the 2025 season, the Golden State Warriors will take on the Charlotte Hornets on New Year's Eve. Before starting against the Hornets, Stephen Curry returned to his college, Davidson, which is situated just outside of Charlotte.

Curry was present at Davidson's men's basketball game last night as the "Stephen Curry Interchange sign that now marks Exit 30 on Interstate 77" was unveiled. At the halftime ceremony, Curry "removed a black cover alongside his father, Dell, to reveal the highway sign honoring his legacy" at the school.

On Tuesday night, the All-Star point guard attended Davidson's game against Duquesne at John M. Belk Arena. When Curry was a student at Davidson, he received a special accolade from his alma mater. In front of the crowd, Davidson said that Exit 30 on I-77 in North Carolina will now be referred to as the "Steph Curry Interchange."

Davidson President Douglas Hicks said:

The entire John M. Belk Arena "reflected Curry's impact." Children and adults "wore his No. 30 jersey—Davidson throwbacks and Warriors gear... Everyone knows that the entrance to Davidson is Exit 30, and we hope that your heart will always lead you back to (the town of) Davidson and Davidson College."




Curry averaged 25.3 points per game across his three seasons at Davidson, shooting 46.7% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc. As a sophomore, Curry led Davidson to an unprecedented run in the NCAA tournament, guiding the No. 10 seed Wildcats to the Elite Eight. Curry scored 30 points or more in three straight tournament games, including a first-round 40-point effort against Gonzaga.

In his final season at Davidson in 2009, Curry averaged a blistering 28.6 points per game, winning the NCAA scoring championship and earning a consensus All-American selection. Curry was twice named Southern Conference Player of the Year while attending Davidson. Curry had a motorway named after him and his No. 30 retired at Davidson.

The highway exit number is aligned with the famous No. 30 jersey that Curry has worn during his legendary career with the Golden State Warriors and the Davidson Wildcats as part of the honor. According to The Charlotte Observer, Curry said to an enthusiastic audience:

"This is my forever home… For me to be able to represent so many people that made this possible, I hope that that’s what they feel. A diploma is one thing. An elite achievement is another thing. This [sign] is another. I might be stealing the sign to take it home."

Curry was accompanied by numerous Warriors players, including Draymond Green and Moses Moody, as well as his wife, Ayesha Curry, who attracted applause from the audience by donning her husband's college jersey. The ceremony was held when the Wildcats played the Duquesne Dukes, who ultimately lost 89-83 in a thrilling double-overtime game.
