The
Memphis Grizzlies will be without Ja Morant when they play the Golden State Warriors on
February 9, 2026. The guard has been ruled out with a sprain in the ulnar collateral ligament of his left elbow.
His absence forces Memphis to continue playing without its main ball-handler and scorer. The team is already dealing with multiple injuries, so the rotation will look different again in this matchup.
Why is Ja Morant ruled out on official injury report vs Golden State Warriors? (February 9, 2026)
The league’s injury report lists Ja Morant (PG, #12) as OUT with a left-elbow UCL sprain. He has now missed 10 straight games. There was no upgrade in his status, so he was never expected to be available for this game.
Memphis will also be without Santi Aldama (right knee), Brandon Clarke (right calf), and Zach Edey (left ankle stress reaction). With several regular contributors out, the Grizzlies are likely to have limited depth.
When the injury happened
Ja Morant aggravated his elbow on January 21, 2026 against the Atlanta Hawks. He collided with the backboard while attempting a chase-down block and did not return.
At the time, the team said he would be re-evaluated in about three weeks. They expected a full recovery but did not set a return date.
A UCL sprain can affect shooting, passing, and ball control. Guards who rely on attacking the rim often need time to recover fully, which explains why Morant has remained out through early February.
What it means for Grizzlies vs Warriors
Without Morant, Memphis loses its primary shot creator and transition player. Jaylen Wells and Cedric Coward, both available, are likely to see more minutes as the team adjusts.
Golden State is missing key players as well. Stephen Curry is out with right patellofemoral pain syndrome, and LJ Cryer is sidelined with a hamstring injury. With both teams short-handed, the game is less about star matchups and more about execution and depth.
The Warriors may try to increase the pace and attack inside, especially with Memphis dealing with frontcourt injuries.
Morant's Possible return timeline
The Memphis Grizzlies previously pointed to a mid-February re-evaluation for Morant. If his recovery stays on schedule, he could return later this month. There is no indication he will be ready for the next few games.
Memphis appears focused on his long-term health rather than bringing him back too quickly, particularly given his recent calf, ankle, and shoulder injuries.
