“It was loaded like crazy!”: Pistons' Cade Cunningham's jaw-dropping reaction after seeing his bank account
The original contract increased from $224 million to $269 million after Cunningham triggered the NBA's Rose rule when he earned the All-Star honors in 2025. This contract is the largest deal in Pistons history and further cements Cunningham’s place as the franchise cornerstone.
Cade Cunningham's shocked reaction after seeing multiple zeros in his bank account
Cunningham recently appeared in his second consecutive All-Star game in LA and solidified himself as one of the greats in Piston’s franchise. What further encapsulates his importance for the team is his 5-year, $269 million maximum rookie extension he signed in 2024, which keeps him in Detroit through the 2029-30 season.
In the latest interview with GQ, Cunningham revealed how the extension amount shocked him when he saw his bank account. He said, “I checked and that m* was loaded like crazy! I think we were going to Sonic or something. Could buy the whole Sonic, man!”
The contract officially kicked in during the 2025-26 season, and is a reflection of the explosive growth of NBA salaries. Under the contract, Cade will earn an average annual salary of $53.8 million throughout the contract with 8% annual raises. For this season, he’s set to earn a base salary of $46.3 million, $50 million next season, followed by $53 million and $57 million. The biggest chunk comes in the final year when Cunningham will take home a whopping $61.2 million. These figures are nearly double of some veteran's total career earnings.
Cade Cunningham's statistical impact and franchise expectations
The Pistons' decision to award Cunningham the max extension was driven by his 2023-24 campaign where he proved his elite productivity by averaging 22.7 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 44.9% from the field. He followed with another outstanding year in 2025-25 where he dropped 26.1 PPG, 9.1 APG and 6.1 RPG.This season, the Pistons are leading the East with 41-13 and with their recent 126-111 win over the Knicks they have extended their winning streak to 4. Cunningham has remained a statistical outlier with his average 25.7points, 5.7 rebounds and 9.7 rebounds and efficient shooting of 46.3% from the floor. He also holds the franchise record for the most games with at least 25 points and 10 assists.
By securing Cunningham through 2030, Detroit’s front office has tied up approximately 25% to 30% of their projected salary cap in a single player. The front office’s bet on this 6'6" framed elite playmaker is wrapped with hope that he will eventually translate this trust into winning an NBA ring.
