LeBron James once again rewrote expectations on Friday night, delivering a composed 28-point performance that pushed the Los Angeles Lakers past the Houston Rockets and into the Western Conference semifinals. In a series that tested their depth early, especially after injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves on April 2, the Lakers refused to fold. The final score, 98-78, told only part of the story. The Lakers’ defense suffocated Houston, holding them to their lowest output of the season. But the spotlight, as it often does, settled on LeBron James. Even now, deep into his career, he continues to produce at a level that feels almost out of place in today’s game.

Head coach JJ Redick did not hold back when asked about James’ impact.“It speaks to his greatness,” Redick said. “To me, he’s had the greatest career of any NBA player. You can argue all you want and I really don’t care to postulate on who’s the greatest of all time, but he’s one of, if not the greatest of all time.”Redick paused, then added what many around the league quietly admit.“And for him to do it again and answer the bell again, it’s really — it’s baffling in some ways.”
The Lakers surged to a 3-0 lead, stumbled briefly, and still found a way to close the door on a Rockets team that struggled without Kevin Durant for most of the series. Now, Los Angeles moves on to face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, marking their first return to the second round since 2023.

LeBron James is thankful for the rest

As dominant as the Game 6 win looked, timing offered an unexpected bonus. Across the league, a dramatic finish elsewhere shifted the playoff calendar. RJ Barrett drilled a late three in Toronto, extending another series and, in turn, buying the Lakers extra rest before their next matchup. For most teams, that might mean extra film sessions or recovery work. For James, the reaction was refreshingly honest.“For me? Yeah,” LeBron said. “We don’t play until Tuesday now. Yeah. Hell yeah. I can go on the golf course now. That’s what I’m thinking about.”
It is a different version of LeBron than the one fans remember from his early Cleveland or Miami days. Back then, every pause in the schedule felt like preparation for another Finals run. Now, there is a balance. A moment to breathe. A round of golf, even.As the Lakers prepare for Oklahoma City, the focus will sharpen again. And if Game 6 was any indication, James is far from finished.
