Sparks flew in the WNBA 2025 season opener at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday as Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese aimed for the basket but was fouled hard by Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark. Reese hit the ground with a thud, and before she could confront Clark, referees and other players quickly intervened to neutralize the situation. Caitlin Clark was assessed a flagrant foul on the play and went on to add some spice in her post-game comment as she called it a “good take foul.”
It’s Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese again
When asked about the flagrant foul, Clark told ESPN, “It’s just a good take foul. Either Angel gets a wide-open two points, or we send them to the free throw line. Nothing malicious about it. It’s just a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that.” Not in mood to take it forward, Reese responded to her remark by telling the reporters later, “Basketball play, refs got it right, move on.”
As footage of their faceoff went viral, fans took sides based on their loyalties. One X user commented, “As she's saying Angel ain't a basketball player now.” Another wrote, “Anybody who’s played basketball at any level knows that. Don’t understand the Reese reaction when she also incidentally did an over-the-back two seconds before that too.” One more added, “And Reese pushed her teammate 2secs before so.”
A fan wrote in agreement with Clark, “She's not wrong. Not going to give her easy buckets. Got to earn on the free throw line.” It seems even fans know what’s about to come this WNBA season. “Thought the w was bragging about officiating getting better this year, what a joke,” wrote an X user.
Clark’s confidence was also buoyed by the win, as the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 93-58. Clark scored 20 points and also recorded a triple-double in the game.
Tyrese Haliburton was in the house
Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton showed support for WNBA star Caitlin Clark by cheering from the stands at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and showering her with praise as the women’s team kicked off the 2025 WNBA season.
Sharing his admiration for Clark, Tyrese Haliburton told ESPN during the game, “She's just so amazing at what she does. I love being here to support her.”
