Steve Kerr moves past Jonathan Kuminga agent drama and refusing to hold grudges after infamous callout
The tension between Jonathan Kuminga and Steve Kerr last season caught a lot of attention, but was it really as serious as it looked? With a few minutes on the court and a public statement from Jonathan Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, many wondered if the young forward's talent was being overlooked. Now, as Jonathan Kuminga steps into his fifth NBA season, it appears Steve Kerr is making an effort to restore trust, but can the Warriors juggle star power while giving JK the position he rightfully deserves?
In a post-practice media session reported by ESPN, Steve Kerr reiterated his stance, saying, "I’ve known J.K. for four years now. He’s not the guy to come in and tear a team down." He also said, "We’ve got powerful leadership in the locker room. … I’m not worried about anything."
Addressing perceived confusion raised by Turner, Steve Kerr told, "Our communication is fine. … I think his agent misspoke, frankly, when he talked about confusion. I’m really clear with all my players."
As he steps into his fifth NBA season at just 23, Jonathan Kuminga is set to concentrate on his defense and rebounding to earn more playing time. Steve Kerr emphasized the need for patience, saying, "I think the role is right there for him. … But right now, we have Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler, two of the best players in the league. So, JK has to do what every player on our roster has to do, which is to embrace whatever role we ask."
He added, "The whole idea is to get him to get better, help him become the player he can become." Steve Kerr noted the benefits of Horford, discussing in Fadeaway World on October 7, 2025, potential lineup options for better spacing. This tactic aims to regain trust and position the Warriors for deeper playoff success.
The Warriors ended the season with a 48-34 record, securing the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. They made it past the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs but were knocked out 4-1 by the Minnesota Timberwolves, which was partly due to superstar Stephen Curry's hamstring injury in Game 1.
Things got heated when Warriors coach Steve Kerr decided to bench Jonathan Kuminga for several games, which led to some backlash from Jonathan Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner. In September 2025, while discussing contracts, Turner was on 95.7 The Game's "Steiny & Guru" show and shared what Steve Kerr had said, mentioning, "The last point where we ended with Steve (Kerr) was, I can't play this guy big minutes.".
Turner described this as the "worst sales pitch" for retaining Jonathan Kuminga, highlighting frustrations over Jonathan Kuminga's limited role despite his potential.
This public callout came from Jonathan Kuminga wanting a bigger offensive role, which is different from Steve Kerr's focus on the team's needs, especially with new players like Jimmy Butler and Al Horford joining.

Jonathan Kuminga and Steve Kerr move forward after public tension
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr responded to the agent's criticisms in several interviews. In a podcast from October 2025 with Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, Steve Kerr mentioned, "It doesn’t bother me. These types of things happen all the time in the NBA. … Everybody who plays in the NBA eventually has a contract dispute of some sort, and they all play out a little differently." He emphasized refusing to hold grudges, adding in the same discussion, "I’ve already talked to JK. We had a good discussion. No hard feelings. Let’s go. Let’s get a move on."In a post-practice media session reported by ESPN, Steve Kerr reiterated his stance, saying, "I’ve known J.K. for four years now.
