Rick Adelman's passing has left a profound void across the
NBA. The Hall of Fame coach died at the age of 79 on Monday.

Adelman built a basketball life that spanned more than four decades. Before becoming one of the NBA's most accomplished coaches, he spent seven seasons in the league as a point guard after starring at Loyola Marymount and earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.
His greatest impact came on the sidelines. He has spent 29 years as an NBA coach, including assistant coaching roles. Adelman was known for his creative offense, player development, and team-first basketball. He guided five franchises and finished his career with 1,042 victories, placing him 10th on the NBA's all-time coaching wins list.
His most memorable success came with the Portland Trail Blazers. He led to two NBA Finals appearances.
Sacramento fans remember him as the architect of one of the franchise's golden eras, while Houston supporters still celebrate the remarkable 22-game winning streak achieved under his leadership in 2008.
Recognition eventually followed. Adelman was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and later received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, honoring a career defined by consistency and respect.

The Sacramento Kings shared, “During his eight seasons in Sacramento, he led the team to unprecedented success and helped create some of the most memorable moments in franchise history. For an entire generation of Kings fans, Coach Adelman represented the very best of Sacramento basketball, and he will be remembered for the way he inspired those around him – with humility, integrity, kindness, and an unwavering belief in the power of teamwork.”
Basketball was also a family affair. His son David now serves as head coach of the Denver Nuggets, carrying forward the lessons learned from one of the game's most admired teachers.

As tributes poured in throughout the league, Adam Silver's message highlighted the qualities that made Adelman so widely respected.
"Rick Adelman was one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the history of the NBA. Following his NBA playing career, Rick turned to coaching where his leadership, innovation and genuine love for basketball left a lasting impression on generations of players and fellow coaches over his nearly 30-year run. He was a brilliant strategist and teacher of the game, and an even better person. I send my deepest condolences to Rick's family and many friends throughout the league."
