Buffalo Bills fans briefly thought something strange had happened with Josh Allen this week. A team update about jersey numbers sparked confusion online and quickly led to speculation about a possible change.

However, the buzz turned out to be a misunderstanding. The Bills did announce a jersey switch involving a player named Allen. But it was not the franchise quarterback Josh Allen. The change actually involved backup quarterback Kyle Allen, which triggered the mix-up among fans.

The confusion started after the Buffalo Bills posted an offseason jersey update ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The team listed several players who will wear new numbers this year. One line mentioned an “Allen” changing his jersey.

That single detail caught attention immediately. Many fans assumed the message referred to Josh Allen, the face of the franchise and the player known for wearing No. 17 in Buffalo. A fan said, “Why did Josh change is number?”

Another fan chimes in, “I am not even a fan, but is that supposed to be Josh ✨,” Another folk added, “Why would Josh change.. So many 17 jerseys are outdated now.”

But the announcement actually referred to Kyle Allen. The backup quarterback will switch to No. 11 this season. Josh Allen will continue to wear his familiar No. 17 jersey. Because both players share the same last name, the update briefly sparked speculation that Josh Allen's jersey number had changed. Once fans realised it involved Kyle Allen, the rumour cooled down.

The Bills’ update included other notable changes as well. Newly signed edge rusher Bradley Chubb will wear No. 9 after joining Buffalo during the offseason from the Miami Dolphins. Cornerback Dee Alford, who previously played with the Atlanta Falcons, will wear No. 23 after signing a three-year deal.


While the jersey chatter created noise online, Josh Allen's focus remains on football. The Bills quarterback is coming off a productive 2025 season. He threw for 3,668 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 69.3 per cent of his passes. Allen started all 17 games last season, even though he suffered a broken foot late in the year. He underwent surgery in January, and reports said the procedure was successful. The expectation is that he will be fully ready for the upcoming season.

The 2026 season now carries huge importance for the Bills and their star quarterback.
