"I'm excited to shock the world": Kareem Hunt talks about his return to action for Chiefs on Sunday

In a surprising turn of events, the Kansas City Chiefs have welcomed back a familiar face to their roster following a major setback in their running game. Isiah Pacheco, the team’s promising running back, has been sidelined due to a fractured fibula, requiring surgery that will keep him out of action for six to eight weeks. In response, the Chiefs have turned to Kareem Hunt, a player who once made waves for both his on-field prowess and off-field controversies.However, an off-field incident led to his release from the team in 2018. But, now Hunt is prepared to "shock the world," in his return with the Chiefs.

Kareem Hunt’s career with the Chiefs began on a high note when he was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Hunt showcased immense potential by rushing for an impressive 1,327 yards and scoring eight touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection. His versatility was evident as he also contributed significantly in the passing game with 53 receptions for 455 yards and three additional touchdowns. However, his tenure with the team came to an abrupt end after a video surfaced, showing him involved in an altercation with a woman. Following the incident, the Chiefs swiftly released Hunt from the team.
After his release, Hunt found a new home with the Cleveland Browns in 2019, although he faced an eight-game suspension at the start of the season. Over the next five years with the Browns, Hunt experienced a decline in his performance. The once-promising tailback struggled to replicate his earlier success, with his yards-per-carry average falling below four since the 2021 season. Last year, he managed only 411 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 3.0 yards per carry, marking the lowest average of his career.
Despite these setbacks, Hunt is now preparing for a comeback with the Chiefs, eager to prove that he can still perform at a high level. Speaking ahead of the Chiefs' upcoming matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, Hunt expressed confidence in his abilities. "I believe I'm very capable of that still [playing at a high level]," Hunt said on Wednesday, according to NFL.com. "I'm excited to go help shock the world and show them I've still got it," he said.

In his second stint with the Chiefs, Hunt is expected to share the backfield duties with Carson Steele and Samaje Perine. Steele, an undrafted rookie, recently made his mark with a commendable performance, rushing 17 times for 72 yards in a victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Chiefs, as reigning Super Bowl champions, are keen to maintain their dominance, and Hunt’s return could be a crucial factor in their offensive strategy as they prepare to face the Chargers in Week 4.
The reunion with Hunt signals a strategic move by the Chiefs to reinforce their backfield depth amidst Pacheco’s absence. While questions remain about Hunt’s current form, his experience and familiarity with the Chiefs’ system could prove valuable as the team navigates the challenging weeks ahead.
