Inside Antonio Brown’s shocking legal battle: Ex-NFL WR’s fall from stardom to being under investigation for attempted murder
Antonio Brown’s familiar swagger was back for a moment as he walked out of Miami’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center last Thursday. He smiled for the cameras, hugged his attorney and drifted toward a nearby food truck, trying to settle into freedom after weeks of uncertainty. For anyone who watched Brown dominate NFL Sundays, the scene felt far removed from the star wide receiver who once drew crowds for touchdowns, not court hearings.
But the moment also showed how much his life has shifted since he last played in 2021. Brown, now 37, had just returned to the United States after nearly six months in Dubai. He was taken into custody by U.S. marshals on Nov. 7, brought to New Jersey, then flown to Miami four days later to face a second-degree attempted murder charge tied to a shooting outside an amateur boxing event in May. He has pleaded not guilty and is set for arraignment Monday. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.
Brown kept his initial comments brief as he walked free. “God is great,” he said. His attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, later described what Brown was feeling. “He was overwhelmed with gratitude, for me, for his freedom, and for the opportunity to finally see his family,” Eiglarsh said.
Investigators say surveillance footage shows Brown wearing green pants, a green top and a green army helmet. They say he punched Nantambu before security intervened. Nantambu walked away, police say, and that is where the accounts begin to differ.
Officers claim Brown appeared to take a gun from a security staffer and chase Nantambu. They say cellphone video posted online captured Brown holding the weapon as two shots were fired. Four days later, Nantambu told police that Brown “proceeded to shoot at him (possibly grazing him in the neck) placing him in fear for his life.”
Eiglarsh has argued that Brown acted only out of fear. “He ultimately hired me to arrange his surrender. ... He always had the desire and intention to answer to these charges.” Prosecutors countered that Brown “chases him down and shoots at him at point blank range.” Nantambu’s attorney, Richard L. Cooper, added, “By the grace of God he was not killed.”
Even with those claims, both sides admit they are not sure if the neck injury came from a bullet or from the original scuffle. That uncertainty could shape the entire case. Eiglarsh said Brown fired only to escape. “If my client intended to kill him, he could have done that. He didn’t.”
Brown’s release nearly stalled when his family did not answer the required early-morning call from authorities, still stuck on a flight from Dubai. Eiglarsh stepped in to secure his client’s release, reminding the court that Brown no longer has a passport. The case is expected to move slowly, and Eiglarsh said that works in their favor.

Antonio Brown faces unclear evidence and conflicting stories in Miami shooting case
Inside a Miami courtroom last week, the first signs showed up that the case may not be simple. Prosecutors and Brown’s attorney both suggested there are real doubts about whether the alleged victim was grazed by a bullet at all. Judge Mindy S. Glazer listened to each side, then set Brown’s bond at 25,000 dollars and approved the least-restrictive form of house arrest with a GPS monitor. The ruling keeps Brown in the Miami area but allows him to work and support his family, which includes seven children and another due in June.Brown kept his initial comments brief as he walked free. “God is great,” he said. His attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, later described what Brown was feeling. “He was overwhelmed with gratitude, for me, for his freedom, and for the opportunity to finally see his family,” Eiglarsh said.
What really happened outside the boxing event involving Antonio Brown
Police say the trouble started May 16 after a boxing event in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. According to their report, Brown got into a fistfight with Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu before security broke it up. Early the next morning, Brown posted his own version of events on X. “I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me.” He added, “I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.”Investigators say surveillance footage shows Brown wearing green pants, a green top and a green army helmet. They say he punched Nantambu before security intervened. Nantambu walked away, police say, and that is where the accounts begin to differ.
What followed the incident
After the incident, Brown left for Dubai. Eiglarsh said Brown had ongoing business there involving crypto, digital assets, live streaming and youth football. Authorities say Brown was supposed to surrender but did not. A Miami judge issued a warrant on June 11, and Brown was eventually detained in Dubai on Oct. 2 before U.S. marshals flew him back to the United States.Eiglarsh has argued that Brown acted only out of fear. “He ultimately hired me to arrange his surrender. ...
