J.J. Watt’s jibe at NFL’s rules gets support from Mini Kimes and Myles Garrett’s fans

Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett delivered another stellar outing in Week 11 as he racked up four sacks and five tackles for loss. It goes without saying that stats like these can easily lock up the AFC Defensive Player of the Week award. However, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year did not receive this honour. When the NFL revealed the winner on Wednesday, Garrett was surprisingly passed over.The honour instead went to Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who tallied 20 tackles in a 16–13 win over the Commanders. Fans questioned this decision, and J.J. Watt addressed the issue directly and even got support from fans and sports journalist Mina Kimes.“The requirement that your team win the game for you to win an individual award is very bizarre,” Watt wrote on X. “It’s best defensive player of the week. Not best defensive player whose offense also played well this week.”Sports journalist Mina Kimes defended Watt’s response and remarked that Garrett should probably win the honour every week!“The truth is Myles Garrett should probably win this....almost every week 😬” she wrote.Watt’s reaction isn’t uncalled for. Cleveland’s offense has been poor, and the team hasn’t been able to take advantage of Garrett’s elite play. Fans were also quick to point out that Defensive Player of the Week is meant to recognize individual excellence and not reward players simply because their team won.And this isn’t the first time Garrett has been overlooked despite putting up historic numbers. In Week 8, he racked up five sacks against the Patriots, but the AFC honour again went to Jordyn Brooks.
