The Dallas Cowboys did spend more than usual this offseason, but the work feels incomplete. A defense that allowed 511 points last year still has clear gaps, even after adding a few potential starters. The front office has kept its options open, and there is a growing sense around the league that another move is coming. One position, in particular, continues to stand out. The slot corner role remains unsettled, and that has quietly become one of the team’s most pressing needs heading into the next phase of roster building.

How could Kenny Moore solve the Cowboys’ slot corner problem

The name gaining traction is Kenny Moore II, a steady presence for the Indianapolis Colts. He is entering the final year of his three-year, $30 million deal, which naturally puts him in trade conversations. As Adam Schefter reported, “Sources: Colts and Kenny Moore II mutually have agreed to seek a trade and a new home for the veteran cornerback. Moore is entering the last year of his contract, and both sides feel it is time to explore a trade. For Dallas, the appeal is straightforward. The departure of Jourdan Lewis left a void inside, and while DaRon Bland was once viewed as a solution there, his preference to stay outside and a disrupted 2025 season complicated that plan.
Moore, meanwhile, has built his reputation in the slot, a position that has grown in value as offenses lean more on quick, inside routes.

Why does this move make sense despite other roster priorities

There are other needs, linebacker chief among them, but the slot corner role cannot be ignored. Albert Breer framed it clearly: “First of all, he’s still a good football player. … His position, too, has taken on greater importance across the NFL—guys who were once purely nickels, playing part-time, are now viewed as starters.”That shift in league thinking matters. New defensive coordinator Christian Parker is expected to rely heavily on nickel looks, making the position more than just a rotational piece. Dallas has tried to patch the role with versatility, leaning on safeties like P.J. Locke and Jalen Thompson, but neither is a natural fit there. The current setup feels more like a stopgap than a plan. The cost would not be prohibitive. With Moore’s contract winding down, a Day 3 pick could be enough, something Dallas can manage given its draft capital. The bigger question is whether the Cowboys are willing to commit to a new deal once he arrives.Still, the logic is hard to ignore. This is a team trying to stabilize a defense that slipped badly last season. Fixing the slot may not grab headlines, but it could steady the entire unit in ways that show up every Sunday.
