“It was equally as challenging as it was fun,” she shared. “What a learning curve to take on this supernatural element to this character, but making it feel very human and very real. I think there’s something about vampires that people love and are really drawn to. It’s just the most incredible original story. But yeah, so interesting to spend your days covered in blood and fangs.”

The role required an intense physical transformation, including spending long hours drenched in fake blood while perfecting the eerie elegance and dark charisma expected from a cinematic vampire. This commitment to authenticity is part of what makes Sinners one of the most anticipated horror films of the year.

Sinners marks Steinfeld’s return to live-action movies after a six-year break. While she found success with voice acting in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the Disney+ series Hawkeye, this film represents a significant moment in her career.


“There’s always the butterflies but so much excitement,” she said of returning to film. “Also, this was my first film back from the (2023 actors’) strike. And we were all so hungry to get back to work.”

Her enthusiasm for the project suggests Sinners could mark a thrilling new chapter in her career, proving she can master a range of genres, from action to horror. To fully embrace Mary’s persona, Steinfeld underwent a dramatic transformation, including cutting her hair significantly shorter.

“I was in this beautiful period hairstyle that I really loved and it helped me embody a character in a way that I hadn’t before. The physicality of a character can inform a lot. The wardrobe, the hair, the makeup – it’s so important,” she gushed.
