Mike Tomlin’s exit from the Pittsburgh Steelers marked the end of one of the NFL’s most stable coaching runs. Hired in 2007, Tomlin delivered a Super Bowl title and never finished a season with a losing record. When a coach with that kind of consistency steps away, the ripple effect across the league is immediate.
Pittsburgh’s latest postseason disappointment suggested change was coming, even if the timing surprised many. While some expected Tomlin to take a year off, early reports indicate he may not stay away for long, with at least one prominent franchise already monitoring his availability closely.
Mike Tomlin linked to Miami Dolphins head coaching vacancy
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that Tomlin is considered a top candidate for the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job after the team dismissed Mike McDaniel. According to Anderson, league sources say both Tomlin and Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh sit at the top of Miami’s wish list, a rare scenario featuring two Super Bowl-winning coaches from the AFC North potentially available at the same time.
Miami’s interest reflects urgency rather than curiosity. The Dolphins have not won a playoff game since 2000, a statistic that continues to overshadow periods of regular-season success.
Despite playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023, Miami failed to qualify in 2024 and 2025, forcing the organization to re-evaluate whether its previous approach could truly deliver postseason results.
Tomlin’s resume fits what the Dolphins lack. His Pittsburgh teams were known for consistency, even when the roster changed. That track record would give Miami instant credibility and could appeal to veteran players looking for stability and a clear sense of direction.
There are, however, obstacles that could complicate any potential move. Miami’s salary cap situation is restrictive, limiting short-term roster upgrades. The quarterback position also presents uncertainty, with
Tua Tagovailoa’s long-term role still debated internally and externally. Taking on those challenges would require patience and full alignment with the front office.
Tomlin is not without leverage. He could choose to step away for a season, much like Mike Vrabel did after leaving the Titans, and wait for a situation with fewer constraints. Still, Miami’s early pursuit suggests the Dolphins are prepared to aim high. Whether Tomlin sees the opportunity as the right fit or opts to wait, his availability has already reshaped the coaching market and placed the Dolphins firmly in the spotlight.
