Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is reportedly pushing for a new contract that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Negotiations are ongoing between the franchise and its defensive cornerstone, as Watt eyes a deal that eclipses current market leaders like Ja’Marr Chase and Myles Garrett. While most believe the Steelers want to keep Watt long-term, the numbers he’s chasing could force some tough decisions. And with age and recent production being scrutinized, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

T.J. Watt’s Target: More than chase, more than Myles Garrett

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Watt’s camp is aiming to top the NFL’s richest non-QB deals. To do that, he’ll need more than Ja’Marr Chase’s four-year, $161 million extension, which averages $40.25 million per year. Steelers radio host Andrew Fillipponi recently predicted a possible deal: "Four years, $168 million, with $126 million guaranteed." That figure would set a new benchmark—surpassing both Chase and Garrett."That’s a little bit more than Garrett," Fillipponi added, pointing to the Browns pass rusher’s recent extension. Watt’s projected deal would beat Garrett’s by $2 million annually and edge him out on guaranteed money too.
In fact, Watt would also top Chase’s guarantee by over $16 million. The offer, if real, would put him in a financial league of his own among defensive players.
But not all fans are on board with breaking the bank. Fillipponi ran a poll asking if fans supported such a deal. The response was nearly split: "52% of those who voted said 'no,' while 48% said 'yes.'" It’s a tight divide, highlighting just how polarizing a contract of this size could be in Pittsburgh.

Age, decline loom over big-money decision

While Watt remains elite, he turns 31 in October and showed signs of wear last season. He posted his lowest full-season sack total since 2021—excluding injury-plagued years—and faded late in the year. In his final five regular-season games, Watt had just two sacks. In Pittsburgh’s playoff loss, he failed to register a single sack or quarterback hit. That late-season dip adds pressure to both sides. The Steelers must weigh loyalty and leadership against age and long-term cap impact. Watt, meanwhile, knows this could be his final massive payday. The general expectation is that a deal will get done, and that a trade is unlikely—but in today’s NFL, few things are guaranteed. Also read: NFL Rumor: Former Raiders QB Derek Carr wants to say goodbye in Silver and BlackFor now, the Steelers are on the clock, and Watt’s next deal could reshape not just his future—but the entire market for defensive superstars.
